Chapter 11 - The Ex-Wife’s Secret Visit

Later that afternoon, as I returned to my quiet estate and unlocked the front door with my new digital key fob, the security intercom chimed softly.
I walked over to the foyer monitor and looked at the camera. Standing outside the gate wasn't a reporter, nor was it a police officer.
It was Sarah—Daniel’s first wife, whom he had divorced five years ago under bitter, mysterious circumstances before she abruptly moved across the country to Seattle.
I pressed the gate release button, walking out onto the front porch to welcome her.
Sarah looked mature, composed, and undeniably successful, wearing a sharp grey trench coat and carrying a leather briefcase.
“Hello, Margaret,” Sarah said softly as she walked up the stone steps, offering a hesitant, respectful smile. “I saw the news on national television. I couldn’t believe it... but honestly, part of me wasn’t surprised at all.”
“Sarah, come in,” I said, opening the door wide and welcoming her into the foyer that had seen so much chaos just days before. “Would you like some tea? I promise you, there’s no rosemary sauce involved.”
Sarah let out a genuine, musical laugh as we walked back to the sunroom overlooking the heated pool. We sat across from each other in comfortable wicker armchairs.
“When Daniel and I divorced,” Sarah began, stirring a cube of sugar into her cup, “he blamed me for everything. He claimed I was holding back his entrepreneurial genius. But the real reason we split was because I caught him doing almost identical financial maneuvers—forging my signature on a small business loan to pay off his gambling debts.”
I stared at her in shock. “You knew about his forgery habits back then?”
“I tried to warn you, Margaret,” Sarah said gently, leaning forward. “When we were married, he used to brag about how easily manipulated you were because of your maternal blind spot. He called you his personal retirement backup plan.”
Hearing those words spoken aloud sent a shiver down my spine. My own son had viewed me not as a mother, but as a financial safety net to exploit.
“Well, his backup plan just blew up in federal court,” I said firmly, taking a sip of my tea. “He and Vanessa are facing up to fifteen years for wire fraud and identity theft.”

Sarah nodded slowly, her expression solemn. “Good. Because if you hadn’t stopped them, Margaret, they would have stripped you of everything down to the walls. And I came here today not just to check on you... but to offer you something.”
She opened her briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of certified bank statements and legal affidavits. “During my divorce settlement with Daniel, I managed to secure secret financial records linking his old shell companies to offshore accounts. I never used them because I just wanted out... but now, they belong in front of the federal prosecutor.”
