Chapter 2 - The Locksmith at the Gate

Within twenty minutes of my quiet call, a heavy-duty van from Apex Lock & Security rolled down my private driveway, pulling right up to the main front entrance. The driver, a weathered man named Tom whom I had known for over a decade, stepped out with a heavy tool belt jangling against his thighs.

Daniel sprinted out of the kitchen, his face flushed with sudden panic, wiping his hands on a linen dish towel.

“Hey! What is this? What are you doing here?” Daniel demanded, marching down the marble steps toward Tom. “You can’t park that truck there. We’re hosting a major event in an hour. Move it immediately!”

Tom looked past Daniel, offering me a polite nod through the foyer window. He didn’t answer my son at all. Instead, he unlatched his side box and pulled out a specialized master kit containing high-security deadbolts, smart cylinders, and electronic keypads.

I opened the front door, stepping out onto the porch with absolute composure. The cool spring breeze caught the hem of my cardigan.

“Margaret, tell this guy to get lost!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking slightly as he realized the neighbors across the street were peeking through their pristine hedges. “Are you losing your mind? What kind of childish stunt are you pulling right before our guests arrive?”

“It’s not a stunt, Daniel,” I replied, my voice level and quiet, carrying easily in the crisp afternoon air. “It’s a security upgrade. For my property.”

“Your property? Our property!” Vanessa shrieked, appearing behind Daniel with a glass of champagne already in her hand, her eyes bulging with fury. “We have high-profile executives from downtown arriving in forty minutes! You cannot change the locks on your own family! That’s completely illegal! I’ll call the police!”

“Please, go ahead and call them, Vanessa,” I said, turning my gaze to her with a chilling, serene smile. “In fact, let me save you the trouble. I’ve already spoken with Judge Ellen Pierce. And as for the locks, Tom has explicit legal authorization to re-key every exterior entrance, side gate, and garage door on this estate immediately.”

Tom gave a crisp nod, snapping open his tool case. “That’s right, Mr. Miller. I’ve got the signed property deed and authorization right here on my clipboard. If you interfere with my work, that’s obstruction and trespassing on private premises.”

Daniel’s face drained of color. He looked from Tom to me, his jaw slackening. “Mom... you’re serious? You’re actually locking us out of our own home over a stupid remark about a sauce?”

May you like

“It wasn't just about the sauce, Daniel,” I whispered, stepping back inside and pulling the heavy oak door halfway shut. “It was about respect. And you ran out of credit for that months ago.”

Before Daniel could lunge forward to catch the door, Tom stepped into his path with a heavy hydraulic door closer, and the deadbolt slid into place with a definitive, heavy click.
