Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s High Society Friends Abandon Ship

Nothing terrifies the upper crust of suburban wealth faster than public embarrassment, falling stock prices, and association with an active federal indictment.

Within forty-eight hours of Daniel’s arrest, Vanessa’s carefully curated social media presence vanished from the internet. Her Instagram account, featuring luxury yacht trips, designer handbags, and staged photos of my home labeled as “our family estate,” was scrubbed clean by an emergency PR firm.

Her high-society friends—women who had sipped champagne in my living room and praised Vanessa’s exquisite taste—publicly claimed they barely knew her.

Cynthia Sterling released a short statement to the local society gazette: *“Mrs. Sterling wishes to clarify that her acquaintance with Mrs. Vanessa Miller was strictly casual and brief, and any association with her business or domestic affairs is completely fabricated.”*

Even Vanessa’s father, a municipal auditor whose own shady financial dealings were suddenly dragged into the light by federal investigators auditing Daniel’s startup, publicly disowned his daughter on local television.

I watched the local news broadcast from my living room sofa, sipping a glass of iced herbal tea.

The reporter stood outside the county municipal courthouse, holding a microphone against the windy spring backdrop.

“...and sources close to the District Attorney’s office confirm that federal prosecutors have offered plea deals to both Daniel and Vanessa Miller, requiring full restitution of embezzled funds and testimony against secondary co-conspirators. However, with all offshore accounts frozen and their personal assets subjected to immediate civil forfeiture, legal experts estimate the disgraced couple will emerge from federal prison completely destitute.”

I clicked off the television with the remote control, the screen fading to black.

The silence in the grand living room was absolute, heavy, and wonderfully peaceful. No screaming, no demands, no condescending remarks about my cooking or my age.

Just my home, my rules, and my hard-earned tranquility.
