Chapter 9 - The Police Report That Changed Everything

The glass french doors burst inward with a resounding crash as four armed county police officers, led by Agent Miller, flooded into the kitchen with their hands resting on their sidearms.
“Federal and county warrants! Nobody move!” Agent Miller shouted, her voice echoing off the tile walls with absolute authority.
Daniel froze mid-laughter, the metal skimmer pole slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering loudly against the flagstone floor. Vanessa shrieked as a female officer grabbed her arm and spun her around, slapping cold steel handcuffs onto her wrists with a crisp, metallic snap.
“Daniel Miller, you are under arrest for felony forgery, attempted wire fraud, and identity theft,” the lead officer declared, slamming Daniel face-first against the kitchen counter and securing his wrists behind his back.
As Daniel was hauled past me, his face pale with utter terror, he stared at me through eyes wide with disbelief. “Mom... tell them! Tell them it’s just a family dispute! Drop the charges! Please!”
I wiped a streak of rosemary sauce from my cheek with the back of my hand, looking down at my ruined blouse without the slightest flinch.
“You called my cooking garbage, Daniel,” I whispered, my voice cutting through the chaotic noise of the kitchen like a razor. “Let’s see how much you enjoy prison food.”
Agent Miller stepped up beside me, handing me a clean linen napkin. “Are you alright, Mrs. Miller?”
“Never better, Agent Miller,” I replied, taking the napkin and dabbing at my forehead where an eggshell fragment rested. “Let’s make sure every single charge sticks.”

As the squad cars outside wailed into the night, flashing red and blue lights across the pristine white walls of my kitchen, Vanessa screamed curses that could be heard three houses down the street.
The Easter party was officially over. But my new life had just begun.
