Chapter 12 - The Foreclosure Notice on Daniel’s Fake Startup

With Sarah’s explosive new documentation added to Agent Miller’s federal dossier, the case against Daniel escalated from a standard white-collar fraud inquiry into a sprawling interstate racketeering investigation.

The high-tech startup Daniel claimed was on the verge of a public offering turned out to be a complete sham—a shell corporation with no employees, no product, and a rented office space in an industrial park in New Jersey.

Federal marshals swooped in on the fake office space early Tuesday morning, seizing computer servers, filing cabinets, and luxury company assets purchased with embezzled investor funds.

Among the seized items was a fleet of three luxury sports cars Daniel had leased under my home address using forged corporate guarantees.

By Wednesday afternoon, bank foreclosure notices plastered the front doors of two commercial properties Vanessa’s father had secretly co-signed for Daniel’s startup. The whole house of cards was collapsing into dust.

I sat in my study, reviewing the digital docket updates on my computer screen, when my cell phone buzzed violently on the desk.

It was an unlisted caller ID. I pressed accept and put it on speakerphone.

“Mom? Mom, please, you have to help me!” Daniel’s voice sobbed frantically through the receiver, sounding broken, hoarse, and utterly desperate. “They won't let me make bail! The judge set it at half a million dollars because federal prosecutors are calling me a flight risk! Vanessa is in the women’s holding block blaming everything on me, and my court-appointed attorney says I’m looking at real prison time!”

I listened in absolute silence, feeling a strange, hollow numbness where maternal anguish used to live.

“Mom, are you listening to me? Please! You’re a real estate attorney! You know how to work the system! Call Judge Pierce! Get me out of here!”

“Daniel,” I said, my voice as steady and cold as winter ice. “When you stood in my kitchen watching your wife pour raw garbage and eggshells over my head while you laughed, did you think about who I was?”

Silence stretched across the phone line, broken only by Daniel’s ragged, sobbing breaths.

“You made your bed in a federal penitentiary, Daniel,” I continued softly. “Now you’ll spend your time learning how to lie in it.”

I tapped the red end call button, disconnecting the line forever, and blocked his number from my phone.
