Chapter 4 - The Forty VIP Guests Arrive Early

At precisely 4:00 PM, a sleek black Mercedes sedan purred smoothly down the private driveway, followed immediately by a convoy of European imports carrying the elite circle of friends Vanessa had invited to establish her social dominance in the neighborhood.

I stood by the second-floor bedroom window, holding a porcelain cup of steaming Earl Grey tea, watching the scene unfold below.

The lead car parked near the fountain. Out stepped Arthur Sterling, a wealthy venture capitalist and real estate developer whom Daniel had desperately courted for months, hoping to secure seed funding for his failing tech startup. Behind Arthur stepped his wife, Cynthia, draped in imported white cashmere and designer sunglasses.

Arthur strode confidently toward the front steps, reaching out to press the brass doorbell.

His finger hovered over the button, but before he could press it, he noticed Daniel and Vanessa sitting miserably on the stone steps outside the locked gates, surrounded by three massive designer suitcases, a Gucci garment bag, and several cardboard boxes filled with clothes.

Arthur froze, his hand dropping to his side. He turned to his wife, exchanging a bewildered glance.

Down on the driveway, Vanessa scrambled up from the stone step, her mascara running in ugly black streaks down her flushed cheeks, her hair disheveled from hours of screaming.

“Arthur! Cynthia! Oh, thank God you’re here!” Vanessa cried out, rushing toward them with her arms outstretched like a drowning sailor grabbing at driftwood. “It’s an absolute nightmare! My deranged mother-in-law has completely lost her mind! She locked us out of the house! The caterers canceled, the doors are deadbolted, and she’s holding our personal belongings hostage!”

Cynthia Sterling stepped back instinctively, lifting her chin with an expression of profound distaste, looking at Vanessa’s tear-stained face and the messy boxes piled on the driveway.

“Vanessa, darling... what on earth is going on here?” Cynthia asked, her voice dripping with chilly condescension. “We came for an exclusive Easter brunch at an upscale estate, not a trailer park eviction.”

Daniel hurried over, looking pathetic and desperate, his shirt collar unbuttoned. “Arthur, listen, it’s just a temporary domestic misunderstanding. My mother is having a geriatric episode. If you can just give me five minutes to pick the side window lock, we can get inside and—”

“Pick the lock?” Arthur interrupted, his face hardening into a mask of corporate disgust. He pulled his hands away from Daniel’s reach as if my son were carrying a contagious disease. “Daniel, you told me your family owned this estate outright and that you were managing partner of the household assets. Now you look like a squatter being tossed onto the curb by an old lady.”

“That’s not true!” Vanessa screamed, losing whatever fragile composure she had left. “This is our home! She’s a senile tyrant!”

“Save it, Vanessa,” Arthur snapped, turning his back on them and signaling his driver to reverse out of the driveway. “My firm is pulling out of your funding round effective immediately. I don’t do business with people whose domestic lives are a complete circus.”
