Chapter 19 - Rebuilding the Rosemary Tradition in Peace

One full year had passed since the Easter disaster that shook high society to its core.

The estate was quiet, peaceful, and smelling once again of fresh rosemary, warm baking bread, and absolute serenity. The marble floors gleamed in the morning sunlight, unmarred by angry footsteps or broken crystal.

Today was Easter Sunday once more.

The weather was magnificent—a crisp, clear spring morning with birds singing in the ancient oak trees lining the perimeter of my manicured lawn.

I stood at the kitchen stove, stirring my signature rosemary sauce in the same heavy stainless-steel stockpot Vanessa had once hurled at my head. The rich, fragrant aroma filled the room, bringing back memories not of bitterness, but of resilience and survival.

There were no rented champagne towers this year. No forty elite guests whispering behind my back. No arrogant daughter-in-law inspecting my cooking with contempt.

Instead, the dining table was set for three very special people: myself, my dear friend Judge Ellen Pierce, and Sarah, who had recently moved back to the area permanently and joined my real estate law practice as a senior partner.

The doorbell chimed softly—a gentle, melodious chime, not a frantic banging.

I wiped my hands on my clean linen apron, walked down the polished hallway, and unlocked the heavy front door.

Ellen and Sarah stood on the porch, holding baskets filled with fresh spring tulips, homemade lemon tarts, and a bottle of vintage Napa Valley wine.

“Happy Easter, Margaret!” Ellen beamed, stepping inside and wrapping me in a warm, affectionate hug.

“Happy Easter,” Sarah echoed, smiling brightly as she handed me the flower basket. “The drive over was gorgeous. Your gardens look immaculate.”

“Thank you, my dears,” I smiled, feeling a deep, abiding warmth fill my chest. “Come on inside. Lunch is almost ready, and I promise you... the rosemary sauce is absolute perfection this year.”
