Chapter 12 - Whispers In The Elite Circles

Spring arrived in the city, bringing with it blooming magnolias along Park Avenue and a whirlwind of high-society galas. For months, my name had been whispered in hushed tones across elite dining rooms and exclusive charity boards—not as the docile trophy wife of disgraced CEO Daniel North, but as the ruthless, unyielding iron lady who dismantled a multi-million-dollar conspiracy in less than a month.

On a crisp Friday evening, I stepped out of my town car and walked up the grand stone steps of the Metropolitan Opera House for the annual Spring Charity Gala. Dressed in a backless, midnight-blue silk gown with diamond drop earrings catching the crystal chandelier light, I commanded the room the moment I entered.

Whispers rippled through the glittering crowd of socialites, executives, and politicians. Heads turned, and people parted like the Red Sea, eager for a glimpse of the woman who had captivated the financial press.

'Catherine Vance,' purred Victoria Sterling, a notoriously venomous society gossip columnist, stepping into my path with a glittering, insincere smile. 'My word, darling. Every time I see you, you look more radiant. Rumor has it you're single again after that... unfortunate domestic incident with Daniel.'

I met Victoria's probing gaze with an icy, serene smile that made her visibly flinch. 'Not single, Victoria. Simply unburdened. Some trash takes itself out to the curb, and others require federal assistance.'

Victoria’s forced smile twitched nervously, but before she could formulate a snarky comeback, a deep, smooth voice cut through the air behind her.

'And I must say, the city's elite scene is infinitely more fascinating now that the true architect of Vale North Holdings is running the show without any dead weight holding her back.'

I turned my head to see Julian Vance—no relation to my family, despite the shared surname—stepping forward from the crowd. Julian was the notoriously reclusive billionaire tech investor and venture capitalist who had recently acquired a major stake in sustainable green energy startups across Europe.

He was tall, impeccably tailored in a midnight-black tuxedo, with piercing silver-grey eyes and a confident, magnetic aura that commanded absolute attention.

'Julian Vance,' I said, raising an eyebrow. 'I wasn't aware you flew in from London for charity galas.'

'I didn't come for the charity, Catherine,' Julian replied smoothly, holding out a flute of vintage champagne for me to take. 'I came to meet the woman who outsmarted the entire financial district in a week. I find brilliance infinitely more intoxicating than philanthropy.'

I took the champagne flute, our fingers brushing lightly against each other. For the first time in years, a genuine, intrigued spark ignited in my chest. Vale North was safe, my enemies were behind bars, and a brand-new chapter of my life was just beginning to unfold.
