Chapter 9 - The Shadowy Cousin And The Final Gambit

With Daniel behind bars and Lorraine banished from the estate, I thought the worst of the storm had finally passed. But in the cutthroat world of corporate warfare, a cornered predator is always at its most dangerous.
It was late Thursday evening when Miriam Cross rushed into my penthouse office, her face pale and urgent. She slammed a manila folder down onto my desk.
'We have a massive problem, Catherine,' Miriam said breathlessly. 'Your cousin Evelyn hasn't fled the state. In fact, she just executed a hostile counter-maneuver.'
I looked up from my laptop, my brow furrowing. 'What kind of counter-maneuver? The SEC and the DA have all the evidence of her embezzlement conspiracy.'
'She didn't use her own name,' Miriam explained grimly, opening the folder to reveal a complex corporate diagram. 'Through a labyrinth of offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, Evelyn quietly acquired a thirty-two percent voting block of Vale North Holdings over the past three years—using the very funds Daniel embezzled from your accounts.'
A cold chill swept over me. 'Thirty-two percent? Combined with the disgruntled minority shareholders who lost value during Daniel's suspension...'
'She has enough voting power to call an extraordinary general meeting tomorrow morning and attempt a hostile takeover of the entire board,' Miriam finished gravely. 'If she succeeds, she strips you of your controlling share and assumes absolute executive control of Vale North.'
I stared at the diagram, the pieces of Evelyn's master plan finally snapping into terrifying focus. She hadn't just been stealing money; she had been quietly buying up the very foundation of my father's empire under the radar, waiting for the exact moment to strike a fatal blow.
'She wants total annihilation,' I whispered, a fierce, dark determination rising within me. 'She wants to steal everything my father built.'
'What are our options?' Miriam asked, her eyes sharp. 'We can file an emergency injunction, but federal judges take time to review hostile corporate acquisitions. Evelyn scheduled this hearing for tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. sharp.'
I stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. The rain had cleared, leaving the glass slick and reflective. I thought of my father, of the sacrifices he made, of the scars on my hand still healing beneath my sleeve.
'We don't ask the court for an injunction,' I said slowly, turning around to face Miriam with a cold, absolute smile. 'We meet her head-on in the boardroom. If Evelyn wants a war for Vale North Holdings, I'm going to give her a front-row seat to her own destruction.'

'What do you have in mind?' Miriam asked, a cautious smile touching the corners of her mouth.
'Bring me Marcus Vance,' I replied quietly. 'It's time for the sibling rivalry to reach its glorious conclusion.'
