Chapter 5 - The Family Conspiracy And The Web Of Lies

The salty harbor wind bit fiercely into my skin, but the cold numbness spreading through my chest was far worse. I stared at Marcus across the rain-slicked wooden planks of Pier 44, my mind racing to process the staggering revelation.

'Blackmailed?' I repeated, my voice barely cutting through the sound of the crashing waves against the concrete pylons. 'What are you talking about, Marcus? Daniel was the one calling the shots, acting like an untouchable king.'

Marcus let out a harsh, humorless chuckle, pulling a silver cigarette case from his coat and lighting one with a trembling hand. 'Daniel is a coward wrapped in an expensive Italian suit, Catherine. Before you two even met, my sister Evelyn had her claws deep into him. Daniel racked up staggering gambling debts playing underground high-stakes poker in downtown clubs—debts he couldn't pay without losing his legs, let alone his corporate career.'

He took a slow drag from his cigarette, the glowing tip casting a fiery orange reflection in his narrowed eyes. 'Evelyn bought his debt notes pennies on the dollar. She engineered your entire romance, feeding him every detail about your father's estate, your habits, and your vulnerabilities. He married you on her direct orders to infiltrate Vale North Holdings from the inside.'

A heavy silence settled between us, broken only by the mournful foghorn echoing across the dark harbor. Every single memory of my marriage—every sweet word Daniel whispered, every anniversary celebration, every reassurance during my father's passing—shattered into dust like fragile glass.

It was all a calculated, predatory lie. I hadn't been a beloved wife; I had been a targeted mark.

'Why are you telling me this now, Marcus?' I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. 'If Evelyn is pulling the strings, why betray her to me?'

Marcus flicked his cigarette butt into the dark, churning water below. 'Because Evelyn is greedy, and she cut me out of the payout. She promised me a thirty percent cut of the embezzled corporate funds once Daniel successfully forced you into signing over your voting rights. But yesterday, when your emergency financial freeze hit, she panicked and tried to throw both Daniel and me under the bus to save her own skin.'

He stepped closer, his expression desperate. 'She has a master server hidden in a private storage unit downtown containing all the forged documents, illegal wire transfer receipts, and recorded conversations proving the conspiracy. If you help me secure immunity from prosecution, I'll hand you the keys to destroy her completely.'

Before I could answer, the sharp beam of high-intensity headlights cut through the thick fog. A black SUV roared around the corner of the warehouse, tires screeching against the wet pavement.

'Get down!' Marcus screamed, diving behind a stack of wooden crates just as a hail of gunfire shattered the air. Bullets splintered the wood inches from where I stood.

Instantly, the darkness erupted into action. From two cars back, Miriam's private security detail swarmed forward, their weapons drawn as they returned fire at the fleeing SUV, which sped away into the night with screeching tires.

I pressed myself flat against the cold concrete wall of the warehouse, my heart hammering furiously against my ribs. Marcus was breathing heavily beside me, clutching a graze wound on his shoulder.

'See?' Marcus gasped, clutching his bleeding shoulder. 'Evelyn knows we met. She's hunting us both!'

I looked down at my bandaged hand, feeling the throbbing pain fade beneath a surge of pure, unadulterated adrenaline. The gloves were completely off now. They wanted a war? I was going to give them an extermination.
