Chapter 7 - The Intercepted Broadcast And The Public Fall

The sun rose over Vale North Tower, casting a blinding golden glow across the glass-and-steel canyons of the financial district. By 8:30 a.m., the lobby was already swarming with aggressive reporters, television camera crews, and paparazzi alerted by an anonymous leak regarding the sudden ousting of CEO Daniel North.

Inside my private executive suite on the thirty-fifth floor, I stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting the collar of my crisp white blouse. My right hand was now wrapped in a lighter, flesh-toned medical sleeve, the burn healing underneath but still tender to the touch. Miriam Cross walked in, holding a digital tablet displaying live news broadcasts.

'The media feeding frenzy is at an all-time high,' Miriam reported, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. 'Every major financial network is running headlines about Vale North Holdings initiating an emergency forensic audit into executive embezzlement.'

At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors burst open, and Daniel stumbled into the office. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in three days—his hair disheveled, his designer suit wrinkled, and his eyes bloodshot with raw desperation.

'Catherine! You have to stop this!' Daniel yelled, rushing forward before two security guards grabbed him by the shoulders, forcing him to a halt ten feet away from my desk.

I turned slowly to face him, my expression completely devoid of warmth. 'Stop what, Daniel? The legal investigation into your multi-million-dollar theft? Or your secret partnership with my treacherous cousin Evelyn?'

Daniel flinched violently, his jaw dropping in pure shock. 'Evelyn? How... how could you possibly know about—?'

'Did you really think your little web of lies was impenetrable?' I asked coldly, walking over to my desk and placing the silver hard drive right in the center of the polished wood. 'Every wire transfer, every extortion threat, every recording of you and Evelyn plotting to strip me of my inheritance—it's all right here. And as of twenty minutes ago, copies of this exact drive were transmitted directly to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the District Attorney's office, and every major financial news outlet in the country.'

Color drained entirely from Daniel's face. He fell to his knees right there on the executive carpet, his arrogant facade completely shattered into dust.

'Catherine... please,' he choked out, tears welling in his eyes as he reached out a trembling hand toward me. 'I was weak! Evelyn manipulated me! She trapped me with gambling debts! We've been married for three years—have a heart, please don't destroy me!'

I looked down at the man who had poured scalding coffee over my hand just days ago, laughing while his mother mocked my pain. The pity I might have felt once was completely dead, incinerated by his own cruelty.

'When you poured boiling coffee over my hand and told me to learn my place, Daniel, you didn't just burn my skin—you burned away the last illusion I had about who you were,' I said softly, my voice cutting like a razor blade.

Before he could utter another plea, the office doors opened again, and two federal marshals in dark suits walked in, flanked by local police officers.

'Daniel North?' the lead marshal asked, flashing a shiny silver badge. 'You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, money laundering, and conspiracy.'

As the cold steel handcuffs snapped around Daniel's wrists, he let out a pathetic, broken sob, dragging his feet across the floor as the officers hauled him out of the office in broad daylight for the entire corporate world to see.
