Chapter 2 - The Emergency Board Meeting And The Mask Slips

The conference room on the fortieth floor of Vale North Tower was dead silent as the grandfather clock chimed nine o'clock. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city skyline gleamed under a slate-gray morning sky, mirroring the cold storm brewing inside the oak-paneled boardroom.
Seated around the massive conference table were the five senior board members, men and women handpicked by my father who had watched Daniel swagger into the company years ago with polite skepticism. At the head of the table sat Daniel himself, wearing his most dazzling, charismatic CEO smile, though a subtle twitch near his left eye betrayed the panic of the past twenty-four hours.
'Ladies and gentlemen,' Daniel began, clearing his throat and spreading his hands wide with theatrical confidence. 'I called this emergency session to address a deeply regrettable administrative glitch. Due to some archaic software errors within our banking partnership, certain executive accounts experienced temporary restrictions yesterday afternoon. Naturally, my brilliant team is already rectifying—'
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp click. All heads turned as I walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray Chanel pantsuit, my right hand neatly wrapped in pristine medical gauze. Miriam Cross strode in right beside me, carrying a heavy metallic briefcase.
Daniel's confident smile faltered instantly, replaced by a flash of sheer fury. 'Catherine? What is the meaning of this interruption? This is a private executive session. You have no business here—'
'Sit down, Daniel,' I said, my voice cutting across the room with a chilling, absolute authority that made even the most senior vice presidents sit up straight.
He gaped at me, his face flushing a mottled red. 'Excuse me? You dare speak to me like that in front of the board? Security! Remove this—'
'Nobody is moving,' boomed Thomas Vance, the eldest board member and a lifelong friend of my father, slamming his hand onto the table. 'Let Mrs. North speak, Daniel. Or have you forgotten whose name is actually on the founding charter?'
Miriam stepped forward, unzipping her metallic briefcase and distributing thick dossiers to every person seated at the table. 'Good morning, members of the board. I am Miriam Cross, legal counsel for Vale North Holdings. What Mr. North has conveniently referred to as an administrative glitch is, in reality, an executive freeze executed pursuant to Section 14 of our corporate governance bylaws, triggered by verified financial misconduct.'
Pandemonium erupted instantly. Shouts of disbelief and gasps echoed through the room as directors flipped open the dossiers, revealing pages upon pages of bank statements, forged expense reports, and wire transfer receipts routing company capital into personal accounts belonging to Daniel and his mother.
Daniel slammed his fists onto the table, his face contorted in rage. 'These are fabricated documents! Lies! She is a hysterical, unstable woman trying to sabotage my leadership out of petty marital spite! Look at her—she is unhinged!'
I walked slowly toward the head of the table, stopping just inches from his chair. I leaned down slightly, letting him see the cold, unyielding fire in my eyes. 'Hysterical, Daniel? Or simply holding the receipt for every single crime you thought you were smart enough to hide?'
I gently unbuttoned the cuff of my right sleeve, unwrapping a single layer of the medical gauze to expose the raw, blistering burn across my hand—the very burn he had inflicted less than twenty-four hours ago while his mother laughed.
The room fell into a stunned, horrified silence. Thomas Vance stood up slowly, his face pale with righteous anger. 'Good God in heaven... Did he do that to you, Catherine?'
'Yes,' I said clearly, letting my voice ring out across the silent boardroom. 'And that physical assault is merely the final entry in a very long catalog of corporate fraud, embezzlement, and abuse.'
Daniel scrambled backward in his chair, stammering frantically as the trap finally snapped shut around him. 'It's... it's a domestic dispute! It has nothing to do with corporate governance! You can't do this to me! I am the CEO!'
'Not anymore,' Miriam stated calmly, sliding a formal resolution across the table. 'Effective immediately, the board hereby votes to suspend Daniel North from all executive duties, freeze his personal assets connected to corporate holdings, and initiate a full external forensic audit by federal authorities.'

Hands shot up around the table. One by one, every single director voted in favor of the suspension. Even Daniel's closest corporate allies, realizing the overwhelming weight of the evidence, averted their eyes and raised their hands against him.
Daniel stared around the table in absolute disbelief, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The empire he thought he ruled had just locked its gates behind him, leaving him standing outside in the cold.
