Chapter 4 - The Secret Bank Accounts And The First Betrayal

The rain lashed furiously against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse office, casting long, dramatic shadows across the minimalist interior. Outside, the city lights blurred into streaks of amber and neon. Inside, the only sound was the rhythmic clicking of my laptop keyboard as Miriam Cross and I combed through the digital wreckage of Daniel's secret financial life.

'It goes much deeper than we originally anticipated, Catherine,' Miriam said, sliding a thick ledger across the glass desk. 'It wasn't just luxury cars and Fifth Avenue shopping sprees. Over the past twenty-four hours, our forensic accountants have uncovered a sprawling web of offshore shell companies and undisclosed personal accounts.'

I leaned forward, scanning the glowing spreadsheet. My breath caught in my throat as I saw the names attached to the recipient accounts. 'Wait... these wire transfers didn't just go to Lorraine or his personal slush funds. Look at this recipient name: Evelyn Vance.'

Miriam nodded grimly. 'Yes. Your estranged cousin Evelyn—the very cousin who tried to contest your father's will three years ago before disappearing from the social circuit.'

A cold knot formed in my stomach. Evelyn had always resented me, claiming my father favored me in his will, but I never imagined she would conspire directly with Daniel behind my back. 'How long has this been happening?'

'Since the first year of your marriage,' Miriam replied quietly. 'Daniel has systematically funneled nearly four million dollars of corporate reserve funds into Evelyn's accounts under the guise of 'intellectual property consulting.' Not a single piece of work was ever delivered. It was pure embezzlement disguised as legitimate corporate expenditure.'

My phone buzzed violently against the desk. Glancing down, I saw an unknown number flashing across the screen with a text message attached. I opened it cautiously.

The message contained a high-resolution photograph of Daniel sitting in a dim, upscale lounge booth, clinking glasses with a stunning, unfamiliar woman who bore a striking resemblance to a prominent high-society journalist known for publishing sensational gossip columns.

Beneath the photo was a text: *'Your husband is already selling your secrets to the highest bidder. If you want to know who is funding his next move, meet me at Pier 44 in one hour. Come alone.'*

Miriam immediately shook her head. 'It’s a trap, Catherine. Daniel is desperate, and his inner circle knows they are cornered. They are trying to lure you out.'

'Maybe,' I said, standing up and grabbing my wool trench coat from the back of my chair. 'But a cornered rat always reveals where it hides its remaining cheese. If Daniel thinks he can sell our corporate secrets to the press to salvage his ruined reputation, he is about to learn a very expensive lesson.'

'I'm sending two armed protection agents with you, parked two cars back,' Miriam insisted, her tone leaving no room for argument.

'Agreed,' I murmured, pulling my coat tight against the biting wind.

By 9:00 p.m., my town car glided silently to a halt near the rain-slicked docks of Pier 44. The fog rolled thickly off the dark harbor waters, blurring the distant silhouette of shipping containers and rusted cranes. I stepped out into the chill, my heels clicking sharply against the wet wooden planks.

A figure stepped out from the shadows of a massive shipping warehouse, pulling back the hood of a dark raincoat. It wasn't the mysterious journalist from the text message. It was Marcus Vance, Evelyn's younger brother—my own cousin whom I hadn't spoken to in five years.

'Marcus?' I called out, keeping my distance as the wind whipped my hair across my face. 'What kind of game are you playing?'

May you like

Marcus laughed bitterly, stepping into the dim amber glow of an overhead sodium streetlamp. 'It's not a game, Catherine. Daniel thought he was the smartest man in the room, but he was just a puppet dancing to a much larger tune. You think he embezzled those millions all on his own initiative? He was being blackmailed from day one—and my sister Evelyn holds the leash.'

My eyes widened in shock as the final, missing piece of the dark puzzle slammed into place.
