Chapter 10 - SECRETS BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS

The heavy emergency sirens didn't blare, but the sudden, sharp click of magnetic locks securing every exit in the Bel-Air estate signaled that the lockdown had begun. Steel security shutters slid down over the large glass windows of the ballroom, trapping hundreds of wealthy guests inside in a state of sudden, confused panic.

"What is going on?" guests whispered anxiously as security guards in dark suits moved swiftly to block every door.

Upstairs in the main hall, Ethan grabbed Sophia forcefully by the wrist, shoving her against a marble pillar.

"Where is she, Sophia?!" Ethan snarled, his eyes wide with desperate rage. "Where is Mia?!"

Sophia didn't flinch. She looked Ethan dead in the eye, a cold, mocking smile playing on her lips. "She's finishing what our father started, Ethan. It's over."

Ethan raised his hand in a rage, but before he could strike her, Marcus Vance stepped out from behind a velvet curtain, striking Ethan across the jaw with the heavy brass handle of a flashlight. Ethan went down hard on the marble floor, unconscious.

"Come on, Sophia!" Marcus shouted, pulling her toward the hidden service stairs. "We have to secure Mia!"

Down in the subterranean basement, Mia was standing in front of a massive reinforced steel vault door hidden behind a revolving wine rack.

The red digital security panel on the vault wall was flashing: *ENTER MASTER KEY CARD*.

Mia pulled Julian Sterling's silver keycard from her pocket and swiped it through the slot.

The digital scanner chimed green: *IDENTITY VERIFIED: STERLING, J.*

The heavy hydraulic locks groaned as the double steel doors pulled open, revealing a vast, climate-controlled vault filled with safety deposit boxes, stacks of bearer bonds, gold bars, and classified server racks.

Mia sprinted inside, her heart hammering against her ribs. She scanned the labeled shelf drawers until she found a thick black leather binder marked: *VANCE ENTERPRISES - ORIGINAL PATENTS & ASSET TRANSFER (2004)*.

She pulled the binder down and opened it frantically.

Inside lay the original, unedited transfer agreement for *Project Helix*. Beneath the typed signatures was a forensic document report stamped by the LAPD crime lab from 2004—a document that had been hidden away for over two decades.

The report clearly stated: *SIGNATURE OF ARTHUR VANCE DETERMINED TO BE FORGED VIA AUTOPEN PROCEDURE POST-MORTEM.*

Next to the report were private bank account records detailing massive wire transfers from Julian Sterling and Richard Montgomery to a corrupt lead investigator on the original crash case.

"This is it..." Mia gasped, tears filling her eyes. "This is the proof. They murdered them."

Suddenly, a cold, metallic click sounded from the doorway behind her.

"Drop the binder, little girl."

Mia froze. She slowly turned around to see Richard Montgomery standing in the vault doorway, a sleek black revolver pointed directly at her chest. His face was twisted into a horrific, desperate sneer.

"You really are your mother's daughter," Richard said coldly, stepping into the vault. "Relentless. Stupidly brave. You should have taken the trust fund, Mia."

"You murdered my parents," Mia said, holding the heavy binder firmly against her chest, her voice trembling but full of absolute hatred. "Arthur was your best friend! How could you do that to him?!"

"Arthur was a fool!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing off the steel vault walls. "He wanted to give the patent away to public hospitals for free! He was going to ruin us! Julian and I built an empire with that technology. I wasn't going to let his ridiculous morality keep me from becoming a billionaire!"

"And you lied to Sophia her whole life," Mia spat. "You raised her while knowing you murdered her mother and father!"

"I gave Sophia a luxury life!" Richard yelled. "She had everything! And now, thanks to you, she ruined it all! But it ends tonight. I'll shoot you here, lock the vault, and burn this entire basement to the ground. Nobody will ever find you."

Richard raised the gun, aiming it straight between Mia's eyes.

Mia closed her eyes tightly, clutching her mother's silver locket in her fist.

*BANG!*

A violent gunshot shattered the silence of the vault.
