Chapter 13 - THE AFTERMATH OF TRUTH

Three weeks had passed since the dramatic night at the Bel-Air estate. The story of the Vance twins, the stolen patent, and the fall of the Sterling and Montgomery empires had dominated headlines across the nation. News outlets dubbed it "The Locket Miracle," and front-page photos of Sophia and Mia hugging in the ballroom were printed in every major newspaper in America.
Julian Sterling and Richard Montgomery—who had survived the vault lockdown after being rescued by federal agents—were both held without bail facing life sentences in federal prison. Ethan Sterling, stripped of his family's wealth and assets, was facing criminal accomplice charges for his role in concealing the evidence.
On a bright Tuesday morning, Sophia and Mia stood in the high-court probate room of the Los Angeles Superior Court.
The presiding judge slammed his gavel down onto the wooden desk.
"In light of the conclusive DNA evidence, forensic documentation, and federal criminal convictions," the judge declared firmly, "this court hereby restores the full biological lineage and estate of Arthur and Elena Vance. The full intellectual property rights, international patents, and accumulated royalties for *Project Helix*—currently valued at over 1.2 billion dollars—are hereby transferred in equal shares to Maya Vance and Sophia Vance."
Mia sat frozen in her wooden chair, listening to the judge’s words. A billion dollars. She had spent her entire life worrying about whether she could afford next month’s rent, working triple shifts as a maid, and now she was officially one of the wealthiest young women in the country.
Sophia smiled warmly, wrapping her arm around Mia’s shoulders. "We did it, Maya. Our parents' name is officially cleared."
"It doesn't feel real," Mia whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "A month ago, I was crying over spilled juice on Ethan's shirt."
"And now Ethan is wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit," Sophia chuckled softly. "Poetic justice."
As they exited the courthouse steps, a massive swarm of reporters and news cameras rushed toward them, shouting questions and flashing cameras.
"Sophia! Mia! What are you going to do with the Vance empire?" a reporter shouted.
"Are you going to keep *Project Helix* private?" another called out.
Sophia took a microphone, standing tall beside her sister and Uncle Marcus.
"My father, Arthur Vance, didn't create *Project Helix* to make himself a billionaire," Sophia spoke into the microphones, her voice clear and powerful. "He created it to save human lives. My sister and I have officially decided to donate fifty percent of all international patent royalties to public research hospitals and low-income medical clinics across the world."
The reporters gasped, taking rapid notes.
"And as for the remaining Vance estate," Mia stepped forward, taking the microphone with newfound confidence, "we are establishing the *Clara Vance Foundation*—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing, education, and full college scholarships to youth aging out of the foster care system."
The crowd of journalists erupted into quiet murmuring of deep respect.
"My adoptive mother, Clara Vance, protected me when I had nothing," Mia continued, holding her silver locket tightly in her hand. "She taught me that family isn't just about blood—it's about love, sacrifice, and protecting those who cannot protect themselves. Sophia and I were separated for twenty years, but today, we are using our family’s legacy to make sure no child ever feels forgotten again."

As the sisters walked down the courthouse steps together, hand-in-hand, Uncle Marcus watched them with tears of pride streaming down his face. For the first time in twenty-two years, the shadow over the Vance family was completely gone, replaced by the brilliant warmth of a new morning.
