Chapter 17 - THE VAULT IN SAN FRANCISCO

The rain had cleared by the time the battered yellow cab pulled up across the street from the historic Financial District building of the Central Bank of San Francisco. It was 6:00 AM, the early morning fog hanging heavy over the golden city streets.

Mia, Sophia, and Marcus stepped out of the cab, dressed in dark coats, their faces tired and weary after the long six-hour emergency drive up the coast.

"The bank vault opens to the public at 8:00 AM," Marcus noted, looking at his watch. "We have two hours to prepare."

"Preparations won't be necessary, Marcus," a deep, refined European voice echoed from the shadowed archway of the bank building.

Out from the shadows stepped a tall, elegant silver-haired man in his late sixties. He was dressed in a pristine three-piece bespoke Italian suit, carrying a gold-topped walking cane. Around him stood six heavily armed men in dark suits, their hands resting noticeably inside their jackets.

It was Lord Victor Vanderbilt.

Sophia stepped in front of Mia instinctively, her eyes narrowing into cold hatred. "Vanderbilt."

"Ah, the lovely Vance twins," Vanderbilt purred smoothly, taking a slow step forward, resting both hands on his walking cane. "You have your mother's striking eyes, Sophia. And Mia... you look so remarkably like Arthur when he was young and idealistic."

"You murdered our parents," Mia spat, her voice trembling with righteous fury.

Vanderbilt let out a soft, amused chuckle. "Murder is such a vulgar word, my dear. I made an investment in your father's genius. When he attempted to breach our contract and hide my asset, he became a threat to national security. Julian and Richard simply carried out my administrative orders."

"You're a monster," Sophia said coldly.

"I am a businessman," Vanderbilt corrected smoothly. "And today, we complete the transaction. Marcus... be a good boy and hand over the safety deposit key to Arthur's journal. If you do, I will grant these two beautiful young ladies a very generous monthly stipend and allow them to live out their lives in peaceful retirement in Europe."

"And if we refuse?" Marcus growled, reaching subtly toward his belt holster.

Vanderbilt’s smile vanished instantly. "If you refuse, my men will execute all three of you right here on these cold marble steps, sweep your bodies into the bay, and take the key off your warm corpse. The choice is yours."

The tension in the chilly morning air was suffocating.

Mia looked at the armed guards surrounding them, then looked at Sophia, and finally at her silver locket hanging against her neck.

"Give him the key, Marcus," Mia said softly.

Sophia looked at Mia in shock. "Mia! No!"

"She's right, Sophia," Vanderbilt smiled triumphantly. "Listen to your sister. She has always been the sensible one."

Marcus hesitated, looking at Mia’s calm, unblinking eyes. He saw something in her gaze—a secret, dangerous spark of intelligence that matched Arthur Vance's brilliant mind.

Slowly, reluctantly, Marcus reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy, vintage brass bank key, extending it toward Vanderbilt.

"Wise choice," Vanderbilt sneered, reaching out with his gloved hand to take the key.

The instant Vanderbilt's fingers touched the brass key, Mia acted.

She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a small, high-decibel personal security alarm she had carried since her days as a lonely catering maid, and pulled the pin, dropping it right at Vanderbilt's feet.

A deafening, ear-splitting 140-decibel siren shrieked through the quiet Financial District, bouncing off the skyscraper walls like an explosion!

At that exact second, three marked San Francisco Police Department cruisers swerved onto the plaza, sirens blaring violently, blocking all surrounding streets!

"Drop your weapons! SFPD! Hands in the air!" police officers bellowed through megaphones, stepping out from behind armored cruiser doors with assault rifles raised!

Vanderbilt’s guards panicked, caught completely off-guard by the deafening alarm and the sudden arrival of law enforcement.

"You trapped me!" Vanderbilt roared, his sophisticated composure shattering into pure rage as he raised his heavy walking cane to strike Mia!

Sophia lunged forward, grabbing Vanderbilt’s arm and twisting it behind his back with all her strength, throwing the elderly billionaire face-first onto the hard marble stairs!

"That's for my father!" Sophia shouted.

Mia stepped over him, looking down at the fallen billionaire as SFPD officers swarmed the steps, pinning Vanderbilt and his guards to the ground and clicking steel handcuffs onto their wrists.

Senior Prosecutor Elena Ramos stepped out of the lead police cruiser, holding a federal extradition warrant.

"Lord Victor Vanderbilt," Ramos announced loudly, "you are under arrest for international terrorism, conspiracy to commit murder, and the assassination of Arthur and Elena Vance."

As Vanderbilt was dragged down the steps in handcuffs, screaming threats in three different languages, Marcus looked at Mia in absolute awe.

"How did you know the police were coming?" Marcus asked.

Mia pulled out her cell phone, showing the active call screen connected directly to Prosecutor Ramos. "I called Elena while we were driving up the coast last night. We set the trap before we even crossed the city line."

Sophia wrapped her arm around Mia, laughing through tears of pure joy. "You really are a brilliant mastermind, Maya."

May you like

Mia smiled, holding her silver locket close to her heart. "I just learned from the best sister in the world."
