Chapter 4 - THE LAWYER’S WARNING

The following morning, the sun rose over Los Angeles, casting long shadows across the high-rise glass tower of Montgomery & Associates, one of the most powerful corporate law firms in California.

Sophia and Mia stepped out of the elevator onto the top floor. Mia was dressed in an elegant navy-blue dress Sophia had loaned her, looking every bit like Sophia's identical mirror image when her hair was done up. As they walked down the marble hallway, corporate paralegals and junior attorneys stopped in their tracks, staring in shock at the sight of two virtually identical women walking side by side.

Sophia pushed open the massive mahogany doors to Richard Montgomery’s corner office.

Richard sat behind a massive cherrywood desk. He was a distinguished man in his late fifties, with silver hair, sharp features, and a tailored charcoal suit. Beside him stood Ethan Sterling, looking immaculate once again in a fresh suit, though his expression was tense and guarded.

"Sophia," Richard said, standing up slowly. His eyes immediately drifted to Mia, scanning her face with an expression of deep, unsettling dread. "And... Mia."

"Why is Ethan here, Dad?" Sophia asked, keeping her arm linked firmly with Mia's.

"Ethan is family, Sophia," Richard replied smoothly, walking around his desk. "His father and I have been business partners for twenty-five years. Whatever affects my family affects his."

Ethan stepped forward, looking directly at Mia. "Mia... I want to apologize for my behavior yesterday at the estate. I was out of line. I had no idea who you were."

"You thought I was nobody," Mia said quietly, her voice steady despite her pounding heart. "That's why you treated me like trash."

Ethan flushed with embarrassment, clearing his throat and looking down at the carpet.

"Enough pleasantries," Richard interrupted, folding his hands in front of him. "Sophia, you asked for answers, and I am going to give them to you. But you must understand that the truth is complicated and painful."

"I'm listening," Sophia said coldly.

Richard took a deep breath, pacing slowly across the thick oriental rug. "Twenty-two years ago, your biological father, Arthur Vance, was my closest friend and business partner. We co-founded a medical tech firm together. Arthur was a brilliant scientist, but he was reckless."

Mia leaned forward. "Reckless how?"

"He got involved with dangerous people, Mia," Richard said softly, looking at her with a sympathetic expression that felt utterly fake to both sisters. "He took illegal loans from organized criminal figures to finance his research. When his debts mounted, threats were made against his family. The night of the car accident... it wasn't an accident. Arthur's car was forced off the road on the highway."

Sophia gasped, gripping Mia's hand tightly. "They were murdered?"

"Yes," Richard nodded solemnly. "Your mother died at the scene. Arthur survived long enough to call me from his cell phone. He begged me to protect you girls. But when emergency responders arrived, only Sophia was in her car seat in the back. You, Mia... you were missing. We assumed the killers had taken you, or that you had been thrown into the ocean."

"That's a lie," Mia blurted out, her instincts flaring. "My adoptive mother was a nurse at St. Jude's Hospital! She told me my birth mother handed me to her directly in the emergency room before she passed away! She said my mother was hiding me from someone powerful!"

Richard's eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous intensity. "Your adoptive mother was mistaken, Mia. Or perhaps she was involved in the kidnapping herself. The point is, Sophia was left behind, and I adopted her to keep my promise to Arthur. I changed her last name and hid her identity to protect her from Arthur's creditors."

"And the photograph?" Sophia demanded, pulling out the two halves. "Why was my photo torn in half?"

"Because Arthur gave me his half before he died," Richard claimed smoothly. "He tore it himself, keeping one half with him and giving me the other so I could prove Sophia's identity if anything ever happened to him."

The explanation sounded logical, pristine, and perfectly constructed. But as Mia watched Richard's tight jaw and the subtle sweat glinting on Ethan's forehead, she knew something was deeply wrong.

"So what happens now?" Sophia asked.

"Now, we put this behind us," Richard said, stepping closer and placing a hand on Sophia's shoulder. "Mia is welcome to join our family, of course. I will establish a comfortable trust fund for her, pay off her school loans, and buy her a home. But under one condition."

"What condition?" Mia asked suspiciously.

"You both sign a non-disclosure agreement," Richard said coldly, signaling to his desk where two legal documents lay waiting. "No press. No public announcements. No digging into the past. The Vance family name remains dead. You live your life as my second adopted daughter, quietly and discreetly. If you agree, you will never have to work another day in your life."

Mia looked at the legal documents, then looked at Richard. The offer of millions of dollars and an easy life was right in front of her.

Then she looked at Ethan, who was watching her with a eager, desperate look in his eyes—as if he was praying she would take the money and shut up.

"No," Mia said firmly.

Richard's smile vanished instantly. "What did you say?"

"I said no," Mia repeated, holding her head high. "You're offering me hush money. You don't want to welcome me into your family—you want to bury me. My mother didn't give me this locket so I could take a bribe from a lawyer."

"Mia, don't be stupid!" Ethan blurted out. "This is millions of dollars! You're a catering maid!"

"And you're a coward, Ethan," Sophia interjected fiercely. She grabbed the two NDA documents from the desk and tore them into pieces, dropping them onto Richard's expensive carpet. "We're leaving, Richard. And we're going to find out what really happened twenty-two years ago."

"Sophia! If you step out that door, you are cut off!" Richard roared, his calm facade shattering completely. "You lose your trust, your apartment, your car, everything!"

Sophia looked back at Richard with absolute disdain. "Keep your money, Dad. I'd rather be broke with my sister than rich with a liar."

As the sisters turned and walked out of the office, Richard pulled out his cell phone, his face pale with fury.

"Follow them," Richard whispered into the phone the moment the door clicked shut. "And make sure they don't reach St. Jude's Hospital."
