Chapter 9 - THE GALA OF DECEPTION

The Sterling Estate was illuminated like a palace under the night sky. Hundreds of crystal chandeliers lit up the glass outdoor pavilion, where classical musicians played violin concertos for an elite crowd of politicians, corporate CEOs, and Hollywood celebrities.

Sophia walked down the grand marble staircase, breathtaking in an emerald-green backless silk gown. Her hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing her long neck, and expensive diamond earrings shimmered under the chandeliers.

Beside her, Ethan looked beaming with pride, sliding his hand possessively around her waist.

"You look stunning tonight, Sophia," Ethan whispered in her ear, pressing a kiss to her cheek. "My father was very pleased when I told him you apologized. Everything is back on track. The merger announcement is happening at midnight."

"I'm so glad, darling," Sophia replied with a radiant, hollow smile. "I just want everything to be perfect."

Across the estate, near the rear catering kitchen, a white delivery van pulled up into the service bay. Out stepped a dozen catering staff dressed in black slacks and crisp gray button-down shirts. Among them was Mia, wearing a dark wig, heavy makeup, and a pair of black-rimmed glasses to conceal her facial features.

Mia held her breath as she approached the security checkpoint at the kitchen doors.

A burly guard holding a tablet scanner stepped in front of her. "ID badge."

Mia pulled the catering agency badge from her pocket and swiped it against the reader. The device chimed with a soft green light: *ACCESS GRANTED - MIA VANCE / SERVER*.

"Go on through," the guard grunted without looking up.

Mia slipped into the busy, chaotic kitchen. Chefs were shouting, trays were being loaded, and waiters were rushing back and forth. Mia immediately grabbed a serving tray loaded with champagne flutes, slipping out into the main dining hall.

Her heart pounded like a drum against her ribs. She scanned the luxurious crowd until her eyes landed on Sophia standing near the grand bar with Ethan and his father, Julian Sterling.

Julian Sterling was a powerful, imposing man in his sixties with slicked-back white hair and cold, predatory eyes. He was wearing a dark velvet tuxedo, and in his left breast pocket sat a sleek, silver electronic master keycard.

Sophia caught Mia's subtle glance from across the room. She gave a microscopic nod, signaling that phase one was underway.

"Julian," a senior senator called out, approaching the Sterling patriarch. "Congratulations on the upcoming merger! The press is dying to hear your speech."

"Thank you, Senator," Julian chuckled smoothly, accepting a glass of champagne from a passing tray. "It has been years in the making."

Sophia stepped closer to Julian, smiling warmly. "Julian, let me adjust your boutonnieres before the photographers arrive. It's sitting a little crooked."

"Ah, thank you, Sophia," Julian said pleasantly, stepping toward her. "You always have an eye for detail."

Sophia leaned in, her hands moving delicately around the lapel of Julian’s velvet tuxedo. With masterly dexterity honed through hours of practice with Marcus, her fingers slipped into his breast pocket, sliding the cold metal master keycard out and tucking it seamlessly into the lace sleeve of her gown.

"There," Sophia said with a sweet smile, smoothing down his jacket. "Picture perfect."

"Wonderful," Julian smiled, entirely unaware that his master key was gone.

Sophia stepped away toward the kitchen corridor, pretending to look for a fresh napkin. She entered the quiet service pantry where the kitchen dumbwaiter—a small motorized elevator used to send food between floors—was located.

Mia was already waiting inside the pantry, pretending to organize clean glasses.

Sophia quickly pulled the silver keycard from her sleeve and pressed it into Mia’s hand. "Got it. You have twenty minutes before Julian realizes his keycard is missing."

Mia squeezed Sophia’s hand tightly. "Be careful out there."

"You too, Maya," Sophia whispered, using her sister's real birth name for the first time. "Go."

Mia tucked the keycard into her pocket and hurried down the narrow maintenance stairs leading into the dark subterranean basement below the estate.

Meanwhile, back in the main ballroom, Richard Montgomery walked through the front entrance, accompanied by two armed private security guards. He scanned the room until his eyes locked onto Ethan.

Richard marched briskly over to Ethan, pulling him aside into a quiet alcove.

"Ethan! We have a problem," Richard hissed nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead.

"What problem?" Ethan asked, holding his champagne glass. "Sophia is back, everything is fine."

"Everything is not fine!" Richard whispered angrily. "My security team just checked the local traffic camera feeds near St. Jude’s Hospital from last night. Sophia and Mia were picked up by a taxi registered to Marcus Vance!"

Ethan’s eyes widened in absolute shock. "Marcus Vance?! Arthur’s brother? I thought he died ten years ago!"

"He's alive!" Richard gasped. "And if Marcus is involved, Sophia didn't come back to apologize—she's here on a trap! Where is she right now?!"

Ethan looked around the crowded ballroom in sudden panic. "She... she was just standing right here next to my father!"

At that exact moment, Julian Sterling reached into his breast pocket to retrieve his master keycard to double-check the vault logs before his midnight speech.

His pocket was completely empty.

Julian’s face turned bright red with pure fury. He looked at Ethan and Richard, his voice echoing with lethal rage.

"Lock down the estate!" Julian roared. "Now!"
