Chapter 7 - THE ESCAPE AND THE SAFEHOUSE

Alarm bells chimed loudly through the basement corridors of St. Jude's Hospital as Sophia and Mia burst through the heavy red emergency exit door into a rain-slicked alleyway behind the building.

Cold rain poured down from the black night sky, instantly soaking their clothes.

"This way!" Sophia yelled above the roar of the rain, grabbing Mia’s arm as they sprinted down the dark alley toward the main street.

Behind them, the heavy exit door crashed open. Ethan's two security guards emerged into the alley, their shoes splashing loudly in the deep puddles.

"Stop them!" Ethan’s voice shouted from inside the building.

Mia looked over her shoulder in absolute terror. One of the men pulled a heavy black pistol from inside his jacket.

"Sophia, he has a gun!" Mia screamed.

Before the man could raise his weapon, a battered yellow taxicab swerved wildly around the alley corner, tires screeching violently against the wet asphalt. The cab slammed to a halt directly between the sisters and the pursuing guards, splashing a wave of dirty water over the men.

The back door of the cab swung open.

"Get in! Move!" a rough, grizzled voice shouted from the front seat.

Without hesitating, Sophia shoved Mia into the back seat and dove in right behind her, slamming the door shut.

"Go! Go! Go!" Sophia screamed.

The taxi driver slammed his foot on the accelerator. The tires spun furiously before catching traction, throwing the cab forward and speeding out onto the main boulevard just as two gunshots echoed harmlessly down the alleyway.

Mia huddled on the floorboards of the cab, chest heaving, tears mixing with the rainwater dripping down her face. "Who... who are you?" she gasped, looking up at the driver.

The driver pulled off a dark rain cap, revealing a weather-beaten face, deep scars around his jaw, and piercing gray eyes. He looked at them through the rearview mirror with an expression of profound emotional intensity.

"My name is Marcus Vance," the driver said, his voice deep and grave. "I'm your father's younger brother. I'm your uncle."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. "Uncle... Marcus?"

"I've been watching over you both from the shadows for twenty-two years," Marcus said, steering the cab expertly through the heavy midnight traffic of downtown Los Angeles. "When Richard Montgomery took Sophia, I couldn't stop him—he had the entire legal system and Julian Sterling's dirty cops in his pocket. And when Clara hid Mia, I made sure no one ever tracked her down. I knew the day you two found each other, Sterling and Montgomery would come to finish what they started."

Mia pulled herself onto the leather seat, staring at Marcus in disbelief. "You knew about us the whole time?"

"Every single day," Marcus said softly, his eyes softening as he looked at Mia in the mirror. "You have your mother's eyes, Maya. And Sophia... you have Arthur's fierce spirit."

Twenty minutes later, Marcus drove the cab down a secluded industrial road near the docks of San Pedro. He pulled up inside a large, rusted warehouse that looked abandoned from the outside.

Once inside, Marcus lowered a heavy steel security shutter behind them, locking it with triple deadbolts.

The interior of the warehouse was a sophisticated command center, filled with computer monitors, police scanners, wall maps covered in red string, and filing cabinets filled with financial documents.

"Welcome to the safehouse," Marcus said, switching on overhead strip lighting. "Here, you're safe. Sterling's men can't trace this location."

Sophia paced across the room, wrapping a dry blanket around Mia’s shoulders before turning to her uncle. "Marcus, in the hospital archives, we found Nurse Clara's note. She said my father was working on a medical patent before he died."

Marcus nodded solemnly, pulling up a series of complex blueprints and schematics onto the central computer monitor.

"Arthur didn't just design a medical tool," Marcus explained, pointing to the screens. "He created *Project Helix*—a revolutionary DNA mapping algorithm capable of detecting terminal genetic diseases years before symptoms appear. It was worth billions. But when Arthur refused to sell the patent to Julian Sterling’s pharmaceutical company, Sterling and Richard Montgomery decided to kill him and steal the research."

"How did they steal it if Arthur owned it?" Mia asked.

"They forged Arthur's signature on a transfer of ownership contract on the night he died," Marcus revealed, his jaw clenching with anger. "And they used Richard's legal power to execute the fake document while Arthur's body was still cold."

Sophia’s eyes flashed with cold determination. "Where is the original contract? The real one with Arthur’s actual signature?"

"It’s locked inside Julian Sterling's private safe," Marcus said. "In the vault beneath his Bel-Air estate. The very estate where you were standing yesterday, Mia."

Mia stared at Marcus, the terrifying realization washing over her.

"If we get that original contract," Sophia said slowly, "we can prove the fraud. We can prove they murdered our parents."

"Yes," Marcus agreed grimly. "But breaking into the Sterling vault is suicide. Julian’s estate is guarded by elite private security, biometric locks, and high-tech surveillance."

Mia stood up, her hand instinctively touching her mother's silver locket hanging around her neck.

"We don't need to break in like criminals," Mia said quietly, a sharp, sudden brilliance igniting in her eyes. "I worked there for three days, Marcus. I know the staff security codes, the service entrances, and the exact schedule of the guard rotations."

Sophia looked at her twin sister, a proud, lethal smile forming on her lips. "Then it looks like the catering maid is going back to work."
