Chapter 14 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Two months had passed since the court judgment. The Vance Foundation had opened its headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, operating out of a beautifully restored historic stone building. Sophia took charge of the corporate and legal operations, while Mia oversaw the community outreach programs, working directly with young adults from the foster care system.

Despite their overwhelming public success and newfound peace, a quiet, lingering anxiety remained in the back of Mia's mind.

Every night, Mia woke up in a cold sweat, dreaming of the dark subterranean vault, the sound of Richard’s gun cocking, and Julian Sterling’s terrifying cold eyes through the glass window.

It was 8:00 PM on a rainy Thursday evening. Mia was alone in her corner office at the foundation, reviewing scholarship applications for the upcoming fall semester. The building was quiet, the staff having gone home hours ago.

Suddenly, a soft knock sounded against the heavy frosted-glass door of her office.

Mia flinched, looking up from her desk. "Hello? Is someone there?"

No answer came, but a thin white envelope was slid beneath the bottom edge of the door, landing quietly on the hardwood floor.

Mia stood up slowly, her heart pounding against her ribs. She picked up a heavy silver paperweight from her desk, holding it defensively as she walked toward the door. She pulled the door open—the long hallway was completely empty, illuminated only by emergency night lights.

Mia looked down at the envelope on the floor. On the front, written in elegant, spidery handwriting, was a single word: *MAYA*.

With trembling fingers, Mia opened the envelope. Inside was a single piece of heavy cardstock paper containing a black-and-white photograph taken over thirty years ago.

The photo showed three young men standing on a boat dock, arms around each other's shoulders, laughing merrily.

One man was her father, Arthur Vance.

The second man was Richard Montgomery.

The third man was Julian Sterling.

But sitting in the far corner of the photograph, sitting in the shadow of the boat cabana, was a fourth man whose face had been deliberately scratched out with a sharp blade.

Flipped over on the back of the photograph was a short, cryptic message written in red ink:

*'Julian and Richard were merely soldiers, Maya. The man who truly ordered your parents' death was never put in handcuffs. Look deeper into your father's original lab journal before it's too late.'*

Mia felt a wave of icy terror wash over her body. Her breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the scratched-out face in the photograph.

Was it a prank? A sick joke sent by Ethan’s angry high-society friends? Or was there a third monster hidden in the shadows—a puppet master who had controlled Julian and Richard all along?

Mia grabbed her phone and frantically dialed Sophia.

"Sophia," Mia whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Come to the office right now. Bring Marcus. We're not safe."
