Chapter 10 - Bloodline of Lies

Inside the pitch-black service hallway of Greystone Manor, the storm echoed like thunderous artillery against the stone walls. Rain seeped through the cracks of the high roof, dripping onto the concrete floor.
Emily ran through the service corridor, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Daniel caught up to her at the foot of the grand spiral staircase, his hand reaching out to grab her arm to steady her on the wet marble floor.
"Emily, stay behind me!" Daniel commanded, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from his coat pocket and shining its bright beam up the sweeping staircase.
"Daniel Sterling!" Richard Vance's booming, cold voice echoed down from the dark second-floor balcony.
They looked up into the beam of light. Richard stood at the top of the stairs, his silver hair wild from the wind blowing through the open balcony doors behind him. Beside him was his head mercenary, a towering man in tactical gear who held five-year-old Lily in his arms. The mercenary held a suppressed pistol directly against the child's side.
"Daddy!" Lily sobbed, her terrified voice cutting through the dark house like a blade. "Daddy, make them stop! I want to go home!"
"Lily! Baby, I'm here!" Emily cried out, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces at the sound of her daughter's voice. She tried to surge forward, but Daniel held her back firmly.
Richard looked down at Emily, his face distorted with disbelief and manic rage. "You... you survived Victor? You truly are an immortal cockroach, aren't you, Emily?"
"It's over, Richard!" Daniel shouted, taking two cautious steps up the stairs, his body shielding Emily completely. "The FBI has surrounded the estate! Your perimeter security is already eliminated! Drop the weapon and let my daughter go!"
"Over?" Richard laughed, a cold, unhinged sound that bounced off the high vaulted ceilings. "Nothing is over, Daniel! This estate has an underground tunnel network built during Prohibition leading directly to the boat dock on the lake! In five minutes, my private speedboat will have me across the Canadian border! And little Lily here will be my insurance policy to ensure your FBI friends don't sink my boat!"
"You touch one hair on her head, Richard, and I will tear you apart with my bare hands!" Daniel roared, his eyes blazing with feral intensity.
"You don't understand the bloodline, Daniel!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing frantically. "Your father built this company on my money! When he tried to push me out fifteen years ago, his helicopter crashed in the Andes! You think that was an accident? I own Sterling Global! I own this estate! I own everything!"
Emily gasped in horror, realizing the true depth of the monster standing above them. Richard Vance hadn't just stolen her life—he had murdered Daniel's father a decade ago to secure his corporate empire.
Suddenly, a loud electronic beep sounded from the wall behind Richard—the internal emergency security hub in the upper hallway waking up as the main generator flicked on.
Daniel's eyes narrowed instantly. He realized something Richard didn't know. When the primary security system was tripped into "Intruder Alert" status, the estate's automated fire suppression and emergency blast shutters could be triggered manually from the smart-panel hidden beneath the third step of the main staircase.
Daniel slowly slipped his leather boot onto the third step, his heel hovering directly over the hidden pressure plate.
"You have five seconds to step aside, Daniel," Richard sneered, gesturing for his mercenary to move toward the rear corridor leading to the escape tunnel. "Or my man puts a bullet through your daughter's leg."
May you like
"You won't get the chance," Daniel whispered softly.
Daniel stomped his heel down on the pressure plate with all his strength.
