Chapter 2 - The Red Light's Revelation

The words hung in the chilly air of the foyer like an inescapable death sentence. Vanessa’s breath hitched violently in her throat, her tear-stained mask slipping for a fraction of a second. She stared up at the high corner of the vaulted ceiling, where the discreet, high-definition security dome glimmered under the recessed spotlight. She had forgotten. In her frantic, impulsive rush to silence Emily forever, she had completely overlooked the state-of-the-art surveillance system Daniel had installed just three months ago after receiving anonymous corporate threatening letters in the mail.

"Daniel, please," Vanessa stammered, scrambling to her knees and reaching out to clutch the fabric of his trousers. "You're in shock! We need to call an ambulance right now! She’s bleeding on our floor! Why are you talking about security cameras when an intruder is dying in our home?"

Daniel didn't flinch. He pulled his leg away from her grip with a sharp, reviled motion. "I already dialed 911 in the car when the security perimeter alert pinged on my phone five minutes ago. The paramedics are two minutes away. But you and I are going to take a very close look at the server room."

"You don't trust me?" Vanessa gasped, placing a trembling hand over her heart in a theatrical display of emotional betrayal. "After everything we’ve been through? After I stepped up to raise Lily as my own daughter while you were drowning in grief? You're taking the word of a delusional, broken woman who vanished six years ago over your own future wife?"

"I'm not taking anyone's word, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice flat, hollow, and utterly chilling. "I'm taking the evidence."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder as the emergency vehicles sped up the long, winding private driveway of Greystone Manor. Within moments, red and blue lights flashed violently through the high stained-glass windows, painting the grand marble foyer in unnatural, frantic hues. Paramedics burst through the front door with heavy medical kits, accompanied by two armed sheriff's deputies.

"Over here!" Daniel commanded, gesturing toward Emily's limp form. "Severe head trauma. She's unconscious but still breathing."

As the medical team rushed to stabilize Emily, placing a neck collar around her throat and applying pressure bandages to her skull, Deputy Marcus Vance stepped up to Daniel and Vanessa. Marcus was a seasoned investigator with sharp grey eyes and a stern, weathered face that had seen every manifestation of human greed and deception in this wealthy enclave.

"Mr. Sterling, what happened here?" Vance asked, pulling out a small black notebook and a pen. "We got a disturbance call and an automated medical dispatch."

"She broke in, Officer!" Vanessa interjected loudly before Daniel could utter a single word. She threw her arms around Daniel's side, squeezing him tightly as if seeking shelter. "Her name is Emily Carter. She’s an old acquaintance who lost her mind years ago. She forced her way in, threatened to take my daughter, and then violently lunged at me. She tripped over her own feet on the rug and smashed her head against the marble base. It was a horrible, tragic accident!"

Deputy Vance looked down at the pool of blood, then at the blue velvet blanket lying near Emily's hand. He crouched down, using the tip of his pen to lift the blanket carefully. "She brought a baby blanket to a violent break-in?"

"She's delusional!" Vanessa insisted, her voice pitchy and breathless. "She thinks my daughter belongs to her! Ask Daniel! He knows how mentally unstable she was after her accident in Chicago!"

Vance turned his sharp gaze toward Daniel. "Is this true, Mr. Sterling?"

Daniel looked down at Emily as the paramedics lifted her onto a stretcher. Her eyelids fluttered weakly, but she remained unresponsive. He remembered the soft, kind smile she used to wear seven years ago before the horrific car crash in Chicago that had torn their lives apart. He remembered how she used to sing softly while folding baby clothes in their townhouse. Then he looked at Vanessa—her perfectly styled hair, her theatrical tears, and the faint, cold desperation hidden deep behind her eyes.

"I didn't witness the fall, Deputy," Daniel said clearly, his words ringing like a bell across the quiet foyer. "I arrived just as she hit the floor. But we don't need to guess what happened. This entire foyer is recorded on our internal high-definition cloud server. The camera above the entrance door has an unobstructed, wide-angle view of the entire room."

Vanessa's hand tightened around Daniel's arm so hard her knuckles turned stark white. "Daniel, the paramedics need our full attention! We can look at stupid video tapes later! Lily is upstairs sleeping; she's going to be terrified by all these police sirens!"

"My secondary security hub is in the basement study," Daniel said to Deputy Vance, completely ignoring Vanessa's frantic protest. "Follow me. We will watch the recording together right now."

"Lead the way, sir," Vance nodded, gesturing for his junior deputy to stay with the medical team and secure the foyer.

Vanessa’s mind raced in terrifying circles as she was forced to follow Daniel and Deputy Vance down the narrow, dimly lit stone staircase leading into the manor's underground vault and security office. Greystone Manor had been built in the 1920s by a reclusive oil tycoon, featuring thick concrete walls and reinforced steel doors in the lower levels. The security server was kept inside a temperature-controlled glass booth equipped with multi-factor authentication.

Daniel stepped up to the digital keypad beside the glass door and punched in his seven-digit code, followed by a thumbprint scan. The heavy magnetic lock clicked open with a pneumatic hiss. Inside, rack-mounted servers hummed softly, their blue and green LED lights flickering in the darkness.

"The system records in real-time uncompressed 4K video," Daniel explained, sitting down at the central desk and waking up three large computer monitors. "Every feed is encrypted and backed up simultaneously to an off-site secure server. It cannot be tampered with or deleted without administrative clearance."

Vanessa stood in the doorway, her hands shaking so violently inside her robe pockets that she had to clench her fists until her nails bit into her palms. *If Vance sees that video,* she thought, *it's over. Attempted murder. Aggravated assault. Fraud. Kidnapping. I'll spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary.*

Daniel opened the control software. "Let me pull up the entrance camera feed from 2:45 PM to 3:05 PM."

He typed in the timestamp. The monitor screen flickered black for a second as the high-resolution file loaded. A progress bar appeared: *Buffering video feed: Entrance_Cam_01... 45%... 78%... 100%.*

"Playback starting now," Daniel whispered, his finger hovering over the spacebar.

Deputy Vance leaned over Daniel's shoulder, his eyes narrowed. Vanessa held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs so loudly she was certain the two men could hear it.

The screen lit up. On the monitor, the empty foyer of Greystone Manor appeared in crisp, crystal-clear detail. At 2:52 PM, the side door unlocked, and Emily Carter walked into the frame, holding the blue velvet blanket. At 2:54 PM, Vanessa appeared from the upper landing, walking down the stairs in her blue robe.

The audio track on the recording was impeccably clear.

*"You don't belong here, Emily,"* Vanessa's recorded voice echoed through the server room speakers with chilling clarity. *"You think you can just walk back into Daniel's life... Lily is mine now."*

Daniel’s face drained of all color. He slowly turned his head to look at Vanessa. She shrank back against the wall, her lips trembling, unable to utter a single word.

On the screen, the argument escalated. Emily spoke of medical records, Illinois clinics, and DNA tests. Vanessa’s recorded face twisted into a demonic sneer of pure hatred.

*"You should have died in that crash!"* the video echoed.

Then came the climax. On the screen, Vanessa clearly stepped forward, raised both hands with terrifying malice, and violently shoved Emily backward. The video captured the precise angle of Emily’s terrifying fall, her head striking the marble pedestal, and her limp body crashing to the floor. The footage showed Vanessa deliberately staging her own clothes, pulling at her hair, and faking tears seconds before Daniel opened the front door.

The video paused on a frozen frame of Vanessa standing over Emily's bleeding body with a cold, ruthless expression.

A heavy, suffocating silence filled the subterranean room.

Deputy Vance slowly unclipped the leather holster on his belt and pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. He stepped toward Vanessa.

"Vanessa Reed," Vance said, his voice as hard as flint. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and filing a false police report. Hands behind your back. Right now."
