Chapter 4 - The Stolen Identity

The ICU on the fourth floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled strongly of medical antiseptic and rubbing alcohol. The rhythmic, monotonous beep of the cardiac monitor was the only sound breaking the heavy silence of Room 412. Emily lay on the narrow hospital bed, her head wrapped in thick white surgical gauze, an IV line hooked to her forearm, and an oxygen mask resting gently over her nose and mouth.

Daniel sat in a vinyl armchair beside her bed, holding the crumpled letter from Dr. Pendelton. The sun had long since dipped below the horizon, plunging the city outside into a dark, tempestuous night. Raindrops pelted the windowpane in heavy, uneven pulses.

He hadn't slept a wink. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the security footage on a loop: Vanessa pushing Emily, the sound of her head striking the marble base, and the horrifying truth exposed in black and white. But deeper than the rage toward Vanessa was a profound, suffocating sense of guilt.

For six years, Daniel had lived in comfortable ignorance. He had built a life on top of Emily's stolen identity. He had allowed Vanessa to tuck his daughter into bed every night, completely unaware that Emily was trapped in a living nightmare, locked away in an obscure psychiatric facility in Indiana, stripped of her name, her child, and her freedom.

A soft groan came from the hospital bed.

Daniel snapped to attention, instantly leaning forward. "Emily?"

Emily’s eyelids fluttered weakly. She blinked several times, trying to focus her blurry vision on the stark ceiling tiles, then turned her head slowly toward the side of the bed. Her dark brown eyes met Daniel's.

"D... Daniel?" her voice was barely a rasping whisper, dry and broken.

"Don't move, please," Daniel said gently, his eyes welling with tears as he reached out and softly took her pale hand in his. "You're in St. Jude's Hospital. You had surgery to stop the bleeding in your brain. The doctors said the operation was a complete success. You're safe now."

Emily closed her eyes for a brief moment, taking a shallow breath. A teardrop slipped from the corner of her eye, tracking through the pale dust on her cheek. "Lily..." she whispered. "Where is... my baby?"

"She's safe at the manor with Mrs. Higgins," Daniel replied, his voice breaking with raw emotion. "Emily... I saw the security tape. I saw what Vanessa did to you in the foyer. The police arrested her. She's in custody right now."

Emily's hand tightened slightly around Daniel's fingers. "You... you believed me?"

"I saw the video with my own eyes," Daniel said, lifting the yellow envelope from his lap. "And I found Dr. Pendelton's letter inside your baby blanket. Emily... sweet Jesus, what did they do to you? Why didn't you come to me sooner? Why didn't you tell me?"

Emily swallowed hard, her eyes clouding with painful, terrifying memories. "I couldn't... Daniel. I didn't know where I was for four long years. They kept me heavily medicated in a private facility in Indiana called Cedar Crest Sanatorium. I was registered as 'Patient 409'. Every time I tried to tell the nurses who I was, they injected me with heavy sedatives. They told me I was suffering from severe postpartum schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations."

Daniel felt an icy chill run down his spine. "Who put you there?"

"Vanessa..." Emily whispered, her voice trembling. "Vanessa and Richard Vance. They paid the facility director, Dr. Miller, tens of thousands of dollars every month to keep me locked in a padded room. They told everyone I was dead so they could seize control of my father's architectural patents and merge them into Sterling Global."

"How did you get out?" Daniel asked, leaning closer, his eyes fixed on hers.

"Six months ago... a young night nurse named Sarah noticed discrepancies in my file," Emily said, her voice growing stronger as the adrenaline returned to her veins. "She realized my medical dosage didn't match my diagnosis. She secretly brought me a phone, looked up my name online, and saw your company's news articles... she saw photos of Vanessa raising my daughter. Sarah helped me escape three weeks ago. We stole my original medical file from Dr. Pendelton's safe in Chicago."

"Pendelton wrote this letter because he was dying, wasn't he?" Daniel realized, scanning the handwritten note again.

"He died of terminal cancer two weeks ago," Emily said softly. "Before he died, he confessed everything to me and gave me the official legal records. I came to Greystone Manor today to bring you the truth... but Vanessa was waiting."

"She knew you were coming," Daniel realized, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Someone inside the company tipped her off."

Before Emily could answer, the door to Room 412 creaked open with an unsettling slowness.

A tall man in a dark tailored trench coat stepped into the room. It was Richard Vance—the powerful chairman of Sterling Global, and uncle to Deputy Marcus Vance. His silver hair was neatly combed, his expression cool, calculating, and entirely unbothered by the late hour.

"Daniel," Richard said smoothly, closing the heavy wooden door behind him with a soft click. "I heard about the tragic incident at the manor. I came as soon as I got word from the police station."

Daniel instantly stood up, stepping between Richard Vance and Emily's hospital bed. His body was tense, his fists clenched at his sides. "What are you doing here, Richard?"

Richard smiled faintly, stepping closer and placing his gloved hands on the top of an ivory-handled walking cane. "I'm here as your chief corporate advisor and long-time family friend, Daniel. To make sure you don't make any reckless, impulsive decisions that could permanently destroy Sterling Global."
