Chapter 6 - The Chairman's Ultimatum

Daniel pulled his smartphone from his coat pocket and dialed Marcus Vance’s direct number. He put the call on speakerphone and set the device on the bedside tray between himself and Emily.
After three tense rings, a tired voice answered. *"Vance speaking."*
"Marcus, it's Daniel," Daniel said quickly. "Are you alone?"
There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of a heavy patrol car door slamming shut. *"I'm in my cruiser outside the precinct, Daniel. What's going on? My uncle Richard just walked into the Sheriff's office ten minutes ago with three high-powered defense attorneys from Manhattan. They're already filing an emergency motion to suppress the surveillance footage, claiming it was illegally obtained without a search warrant."*
"Marcus, listen to me carefully," Daniel said, his voice as sharp as glass. "Your uncle Richard visited Emily's hospital room ten minutes ago. He threatened to use corrupt family court judges to seize my daughter Lily tonight if I don't drop the attempted murder charges against Vanessa."
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the phone speaker. *"He did what? Daniel, Richard is ruthless, but child abduction through probate court..."*
"It's not just child abduction, Marcus," Daniel interrupted coldly. "Six years ago, Emily Carter didn't die in a car accident. She was kidnapped, stripped of her legal identity, and forcibly committed to Cedar Crest Sanatorium in Indiana under a fake name. Vanessa and Richard paid off the attending doctor, Dr. Pendelton, to falsify her death certificate so Vanessa could take Emily's newborn child."
A long, suffocating silence filled the line. Marcus's heavy breathing was the only sound.
*"Jesus Christ..."* Marcus finally breathed out, his voice shaking with disbelief. *"Are you tellin' me my family... my own uncle... helped kidnap a baby and imprison an innocent woman for six years?"*
"I have Dr. Pendelton's signed deathbed confession right here in my hand, Marcus," Daniel said. "And Emily is sitting right next to me, fully conscious. She escaped from Cedar Crest three weeks ago with the help of a nurse."
*"Daniel... if this is true... if Richard is involved in human trafficking, kidnapping, and medical falsification, this isn't a local police matter anymore,"* Marcus said, his tone shifting from hesitant deputy to determined federal investigator. *"This is federal. The FBI's Public Corruption and Special Victims task force in Albany has been quietly investigating my uncle's real estate development firms for six months over money laundering."*
"Can you get the FBI involved before Richard's judges issue a temporary custody order tomorrow morning?" Daniel asked urgently.
*"I have a direct contact at the FBI field office in Albany,"* Marcus replied without hesitation. *"Special Agent Sarah Jenkins. She's been begging me for a crack in Richard's armor for two years. Send me a high-resolution scan of Pendelton's confession right now. I will drive to Albany tonight."*
"I'm sending it now," Daniel said, quickly snapping clear photographs of the legal documents and transmitting them via an encrypted messaging application. "Marcus... be careful. If Richard finds out you're turning against him..."
*"Richard isn't my family anymore,"* Marcus spat bitterly. *"He ruined my father's reputation, and I won't let him ruin a child's life. Keep Emily safe in that hospital. Don't go back to Greystone Manor alone."*
The call disconnected.
Daniel looked at Emily, a grim, determined smile forming on his lips. "The first piece on the chessboard has moved."
Meanwhile, three miles away at the county courthouse, Richard Vance sat in the back seat of his black luxury sedan, swirling a glass of scotch. His chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton Jr. (no relation to the deceased doctor), turned from the front seat.
"Sir," the lawyer said nervously, "if Daniel Sterling refuses the offer, the media fallout could be catastrophic. The video footage from the server..."
"The video footage will disappear," Richard said smoothly, taking a sip of his drink. "By 3:00 AM, the server room at Greystone Manor will suffer an unfortunate electrical fire. And as for Emily Carter..."

Richard pulled out a burner phone and tapped a short text message to his personal security chief, Victor: *Execute Protocol Bravo. Erase the witness at St. Jude's immediately.*
Richard closed the phone with a satisfying snap. "By sunrise, Daniel Sterling will have no witnesses, no video evidence, and no choice but to resign as CEO."
