Chapter 17 - The Trial of Greystone

Six months later.
The Federal District Courthouse in downtown Manhattan was swarming with hundreds of reporters, news camera crews, and satellite trucks. The trial of the "Greystone Manor Kidnapping and Conspiracy" had dominated national headlines for months.
Inside Courtroom 302, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation.
Judge Eleanor Vance sat at the elevated bench, her stern face reflecting the solemn weight of the proceedings.
In the defense row, Vanessa Reed sat wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists anchored to a heavy waist restraint. Beside her sat Richard Vance, wearing a matching uniform, his silver hair unkempt, his face aged by six months in federal custody. Their defense attorneys looked defeated before the jury.
On the left side of the courtroom sat Daniel Sterling and Emily Carter. Emily wore an elegant navy suit, looking healthy, radiant, and strong. Beside them sat Deputy Marcus Vance, who had been officially promoted to Chief Deputy for his heroic actions.
"The jury has reached a verdict," the bailiff announced loudly.
Judge Eleanor Vance looked down at the jury foreman. "Will the defendants please stand?"
Vanessa and Richard stood up under the watch of federal marshals. Vanessa’s hands shook violently, her chains rattling against her jumpsuit. She cast a desperate look back at Emily, but Emily met her gaze with absolute, unshakeable composure.
"On Count One: Conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping... GUILTY," the foreman read clearly.
"On Count Two: Attempted pre-meditated murder... GUILTY."
"On Count Three: Tampering with medical records and identity theft... GUILTY."
Vanessa collapsed back into her seat, weeping hysterically.
"On Count One regarding Richard Vance: Federal racketeering and corporate fraud... GUILTY."
"On Count Two: Conspiracy to commit murder... GUILTY."
Judge Eleanor Vance slammed her heavy wooden gavel down with a sharp *CRACK!*

"Vanessa Reed, I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole," the judge declared sternly. "Richard Vance, I sentence you to fifty years in federal penitentiary."
As the guards dragged the sobbing Vanessa and defeated Richard away through the rear doors, the courtroom gallery erupted into resounding applause.
