Chapter 16 - Unmasking the Puppeteer

One month after the dramatic night at Greystone Manor, the federal grand jury in Manhattan issued a fifty-count indictment against Richard Vance, Vanessa Reed, Dr. Miller of Cedar Crest Sanatorium, and twelve senior executives of Sterling Global.

Special Agent Sarah Jenkins met with Daniel and Emily at the FBI regional field office to go over the final prosecution strategy.

"Dr. Miller turned state's evidence yesterday," Agent Jenkins informed them, sliding a set of signed depositions across the conference table. "He admitted that Richard Vance paid Cedar Crest two hundred thousand dollars annually to maintain Emily under heavy sedation without a legal commitment order."

Emily looked at the documents, feeling a profound sense of relief as her years of suffering were officially validated by federal prosecutors. "What will happen to Cedar Crest?"

"The facility has been permanently shut down by federal marshals," Jenkins replied warmly. "All remaining patients have been transferred to legitimate, accredited medical facilities, and six corrupt staff members are facing felony charges."

"And Richard's assets?" Daniel asked.

"Every single dollar Richard embezzled from Sterling Global has been frozen," Jenkins explained. "The court will oversee the complete restoration of those funds to the corporation and to Emily's legal trust."

Daniel looked at Emily, holding her hand tightly. "We're going to use those recovered funds to establish a non-profit foundation in Emily's name—to help other victims of institutional fraud and illegal restraint."

"That is a noble legacy, Mr. Sterling," Agent Jenkins smiled warmly. "Justice is finally complete."
