Chapter 7 - The Whispering Asylum

The clock on the wall of Hospital Room 412 ticked relentlessly past 2:00 AM. Outside, the rainstorm had escalated into a violent summer thunderstorm. Lightning illuminated the dark hospital window in sharp, violet flashes, followed by the deep rumble of thunder that rattled the double-paned glass frames.
Emily lay in bed, her eyes wide open, staring at the dimly lit ceiling. Sleep was an impossible luxury. Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the screech of tires from the icy bridge six years ago, or saw Vanessa's cold sneer before she shoved her down the stairs.
Daniel was fast asleep in the vinyl armchair beside her, his head turned to the side, his breathing slow and heavy. He had spent the last three hours coordinating security measures with his personal head of security, but sheer physical fatigue had finally claimed him.
Suddenly, the faint click of the door handle echoed in the quiet room.
Emily’s eyes instantly darted toward the entrance. She didn't move a muscle, every sense in her body instantly hyper-attuned to danger after six years of survival in Cedar Crest.
The heavy wooden door creaked open an inch. A tall silhouette slipped through the narrow gap—a heavily built man wearing a dark rain jacket with the hood pulled low over his face, hiding his features in shadow. In his right hand, he carried a small metallic tool case. In his left hand, he held a disposable plastic syringe already filled with a clear, colorless liquid.
Emily's heart hammered frantically against her ribs like a trapped bird. *He's here to finish what Vanessa started,* she realized with terrifying clarity.
The masked intruder stepped silently across the smooth linoleum floor, completely ignoring the sleeping Daniel in the armchair. His eyes were fixed entirely on Emily’s IV line—the thin plastic tube running from the hanging bag of saline directly into the vein in her left forearm.
He reached out his gloved hand, uncapping the syringe needle with his teeth. He prepared to inject the lethal dose of potassium chloride directly into the injection port of the IV line.
Emily didn't scream. Screaming would take too long, and the intruder could easily overpower her before help arrived. Instead, with all the explosive strength left in her frail body, she reached out, grabbed the heavy ceramic water pitcher sitting on her bedside tray, and slammed it with maximum force directly against the intruder’s face!
*CRASH!*
The ceramic pitcher shattered into a hundred jagged pieces. Ice water and sharp porcelain fragments exploded across the intruder's face and eyes. The man let out a muffled roar of pain, stumbling backward and dropping the syringe onto the floor.
"What the hell?!" Daniel screamed, waking up instantly as the sound of breaking glass shattered the quiet room.
Daniel didn't hesitate. Recognizing the deadly threat in a fraction of a second, he threw his entire weight off the armchair, tackling the hooded man around the waist. Both men crashed violently into the metal food cart, sending stainless steel trays, medical monitors, and utensils tumbling onto the floor with a deafening clatter.
"Emily, hit the emergency panic button!" Daniel yelled as he wrestled frantically with the assassin on the slippery floor.
The intruder was larger, heavier, and clearly trained in hand-to-hand combat. He slammed his thick elbow hard into Daniel's ribs, knocking the breath out of him with a sickening thud. Daniel groaned in agony, his grip loosening for a split second. The intruder scrambled to his feet, pulling a sharp six-inch tactical knife from his belt sheath.
"Stay down, Sterling!" the man growled in a raspy, gravelly voice. He raised the blade, lunging forward with lethal intent toward Daniel's chest!
*BANG!*
A deafening gunshot shattered the air in the narrow hospital room.
The intruder froze in mid-strike, his eyes widening in shock. The tactical knife slipped from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly onto the floor. A small hole appeared in the center of his chest, surrounded by a rapidly spreading circle of deep crimson. He collapsed backward onto the floor, motionless.
Standing in the open doorway of Room 412 was Deputy Marcus Vance, his service weapon drawn and smoke still curling faintly from the barrel. Standing right beside him was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a dark charcoal suit with a gold federal badge clipped to her belt—Special Agent Sarah Jenkins of the FBI.
"Clear!" Agent Jenkins shouted, drawing her weapon and scanning the dark hospital hallway behind them. "Local hospital security has been compromised! Get medical personnel in here now!"
Daniel scrambled up from the floor, clutching his badly bruised ribs, and rushed directly to Emily's side. She was hyperventilating, holding the bedsheet tight against her chest, her brown eyes wide with shock.
"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?!" Daniel asked frantically, checking her arms and shoulders for injuries.
"I'm... I'm okay," Emily gasped, her voice trembling violently. "I hit him with the pitcher..."
Deputy Vance holstered his weapon and knelt beside the fallen intruder. He pulled back the man's dark hood and checked his neck pulse. "He's dead. Shot straight through the heart." Vance searched the man's jacket pockets, pulling out a thick leather wallet and a set of encrypted keys. He opened the driver's license inside the wallet.
"Who is he, Marcus?" Daniel demanded, struggling to keep his voice steady.
Marcus looked up at Daniel, his face deathly pale under the harsh fluorescent lights. "His name is Victor Vance. He's my uncle Richard's personal head of security... and a former covert contractor."
Agent Jenkins stepped into the room, her expression grim as she looked down at the corpse, then at the dropped syringe on the floor. "This was a clean execution attempt. Richard Vance realized we were moving on him. He tried to eliminate the primary witness before we could secure a federal arrest warrant."
"Then he knows Marcus turned on him," Daniel realized with a jolt of panic.

"Yes," Agent Jenkins said, pulling out her secure satellite communications phone. "Which means Richard is currently executing his exit strategy. He's going to clear out his off-shore accounts and flee the country. And he won't leave without taking his most valuable collateral."
Emily's blood ran cold. "Lily..." she whispered, her voice choking with absolute terror. "He's going for Lily at Greystone Manor!"
