Chapter 9 - The Betrayal in the Precinct

While the battle raged at Greystone Manor, a secondary storm was breaking at the county sheriff's precinct five miles away.

In a soundproof interrogation room on the second floor, Vanessa Reed sat handcuffed to a heavy metal table. Her blonde hair hung in greasy strands around her pale face, her designer blue robe ruined, her expensive makeup smeared with tears. Sitting across from her was Assistant District Attorney Thomas Blake, a no-nonsense prosecutor with a reputation for merciless cross-examinations.

"Let me be very clear with you, Ms. Reed," ADA Blake said, leaning across the wooden table and placing a thick folder between them. "Your uncle-in-law, Richard Vance, sent three high-priced defense lawyers to get you bail an hour ago. But those lawyers just walked out of the building."

Vanessa lifted her bloodshot eyes, her voice trembling. "What? Why? Where did they go?"

"They left because the FBI just seized all of Richard Vance's off-shore banking accounts in the Cayman Islands," Blake said calmly. "Your legal retainer bounced five minutes ago. You are officially represented by the public defender's office now."

Vanessa’s mouth fell open. "No... no, Richard promised me! He said he had the judge in his pocket! He said I would be out by morning!"

"Richard Vance lied to you, Vanessa," Blake said, pulling out a set of glossy black-and-white photographs from the folder and sliding them across the table. "While you were sitting here relying on his promises, Richard sent his chief of security, Victor Vance, to St. Jude's Hospital to execute Emily Carter with a syringe of potassium chloride."

Vanessa gasped, staring at the photo of Victor Vance lying dead on the hospital floor. "Victor... is dead?"

"Deputy Marcus Vance shot him dead in self-defense," Blake said, leaning back in his chair. "And right now, Special Agent Sarah Jenkins is leading a federal raid on Greystone Manor to arrest Richard for attempted murder, child abduction, and federal racketeering."

Vanessa began to pant hysterically, her chest heaving as panic seized her completely. "He... he tried to kill her in the hospital? He promised me we were just going to declare her insane!"

"Richard Vance was never going to protect you, Vanessa," Blake said, his voice dropping to a low, persuasive register. "You were his fall guy. If Emily Carter died, you would take the wrap for attempted murder while Richard took the company and the child. He used you."

Tears spilled over Vanessa’s cheeks, but this time they were not fake. They were the raw, terrified tears of a creature that had been trapped in its own web of deceit.

"What... what happens to me?" Vanessa whimpered, her hands trembling so hard the handcuffs clattered against the table.

"If you cooperate right now," ADA Blake said, pushing an audio recorder toward her, "if you give us a full, taped confession outlining Richard Vance's involvement in the 2020 car crash, Dr. Pendelton's medical falsification, and the payments to Cedar Crest Sanatorium... I will recommend to the federal prosecutor that they take the death penalty off the table."

Vanessa looked at the small black recorder. She thought of Richard Vance, who had abandoned her the second the money dried up. She thought of Daniel, who looked at her with pure disgust in the server room. The web of vanity and wealth she had constructed had collapsed into dust.

"Turn it on," Vanessa whispered, her voice barely audible.

ADA Blake hit the red record button. "This is Assistant District Attorney Thomas Blake, interviewing defendant Vanessa Reed on July 25th at 2:35 AM. Vanessa, please state your name and recount the events starting from November 12, 2020."

Vanessa took a shaky breath, wiped her nose with her sleeve, and began to speak into the microphone.

"My name is Vanessa Reed," she rasped. "Six years ago... Richard Vance offered me two million dollars and the hand of Daniel Sterling if I helped him eliminate Emily Carter..."

For forty-five minutes, Vanessa detailed every sin, every bribe, and every cold-blooded calculation. She confessed to spiking Emily's brakes on the night of the accident, paying Dr. Pendelton half a million dollars to forge the death certificate, and arranging the monthly payments to Cedar Crest Sanatorium to keep Emily drugged in room 409.

When she finished, ADA Blake stopped the recording. He looked at her with a mix of professional satisfaction and deep moral revulsion.

"Thank you, Ms. Reed," Blake said, standing up and closing his folder. "You've just guaranteed your uncle a life sentence. And yourself one as well."
