Chapter 8 - Midnight Infiltration

The storm raged with terrifying fury across upstate New York as three dark vehicles sped along the winding highway. Torrential rain flashed against the windshield of Agent Jenkins’ dark SUV as it navigated the slippery blacktop toward Greystone Manor. Blue and red police lights flickered through the sheet of falling rain, but no sirens were blaring—they were approaching stealthily, knowing that Richard Vance was armed, dangerous, and backed by heavily armed private mercenaries.
Inside the SUV, Daniel sat in the passenger seat, clutching his phone with white knuckles. Beside him in the back seat, Emily sat wrapped in a thick wool coat provided by the FBI, an emergency medical bandage secured tightly over her forehead injury. She had steadfastly refused to stay behind at the hospital, threatening to walk out on foot if they didn't take her with them.
"I called Mrs. Higgins ten minutes ago," Daniel said, his voice laced with suffocating anxiety as he stared at his black phone screen. "No answer. The call goes straight to automated voicemail."
"The storm might have knocked out the cell towers near the valley," Marcus Vance said from the rear seat, checking the magazine of his service weapon. "Or Richard's men used a signal jammer before breaching the outer perimeter."
"How many men does Richard have?" Agent Jenkins asked, her eyes glued to the dark, waterlogged road ahead.
"His private security team consists of four to six former military contractors," Marcus replied grimly. "They're armed with high-caliber tactical weapons. They handle security for his illegal shell companies and off-shore shipping operations."
"We have two federal tactical units converging on the estate from the north and south," Jenkins said, tapping her wireless earpiece. "Tactical Alpha is two minutes away. We do not engage until backup arrives unless there is an immediate, demonstrable threat to the child's life."
"My daughter is in that house with a lunatic!" Emily cried out from the back seat, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "We can't wait two minutes! If he takes her into the woods or onto a private helicopter..."
"Emily, listen to me," Daniel said, turning around in his seat to hold her cold hands in his. "Greystone Manor was built like a fortress. The safe room in the master suite has a three-inch reinforced steel door with an independent oxygen supply and a biometric lock that only my handprint can open. Mrs. Higgins knows the security protocol. If she heard an intrusion, she took Lily straight into the safe room."
"Unless Richard got to them before they reached the second floor," Emily whispered, tears sparkling in her dark eyes.
The SUV rounded the final bend of the private driveway. The towering wrought-iron gates of Greystone Manor swung open uselessly, their electronics fried and sparks flying from the control box. Heavy, deep tire tracks were churned into the muddy front lawn.
"Perimeter breached," Agent Jenkins muttered into her radio mic. "Alpha Team, status update?"
*"Alpha Leader here,"* a static-heavy voice responded through the dashboard speakers. *"We are at the southern perimeter gate. We have visual on two armed individuals outside the main courtyard. Requesting permission to neutralize."*
"Permission granted," Jenkins ordered clearly. "Non-lethal force if possible, lethal if fired upon."
Agent Jenkins slammed on the brakes, stopping the SUV two hundred yards from the grand stone entrance. The massive manor house loomed in the dark night, completely blacked out except for flickering yellow light spilling from the second-floor master balcony.
"Look!" Daniel pointed upward through the rain-streaked window.
Through the pouring rain, two shadows were visible on the high second-floor balcony. One was Richard Vance, wearing a thick black trench coat and holding a silver briefcase. Beside him was a large, muscular mercenary holding a small, struggling figure wrapped in a yellow raincoat—Lily.
"He's got her!" Emily screamed, reaching blindly for the SUV door handle.
"Emily, stay in the vehicle!" Marcus shouted, lunging forward to lock the doors. "It's a crossfire zone!"
"I'm not staying here!" Emily yelled with fierce, motherly fury. She unlocked the door and threw herself out into the torrential rain, sprinting across the muddy lawn toward the side service entrance of the manor.
"Emily!" Daniel screamed, unbuckling his seatbelt and tearing after her into the roaring storm.
"Dammit!" Agent Jenkins swore, drawing her weapon and signaling to Marcus. "Move in! Cover them!"

Gunfire suddenly erupted near the estate's west wing. Suppressed automatic bursts from Richard's mercenaries echoed through the thunderous sky, answered by the sharp, authoritative cracks of FBI tactical rifles. Red and white flashes illuminated the rainy courtyard like stroboscopic lightning.
Emily didn't care about the bullets snapping through the cold air around her. Six years of agony, six years of locked doors and stolen motherhood distilled into a single, unstoppable instinct. She reached the side service entrance—a heavy oak door—and shoved it open with all her weight.
