Chapter 10 - The Unseen Enemy

With Julian Vance locked away in a maximum-security federal prison, a profound sense of relief settled over the Vance family. Anna Vance's reputation was fully restored in the national press, and the family legacy was secure.

Spring arrived in Boston, bringing blooming cherry blossoms and warm sunshine. Arthur formally announced his retirement as CEO of Vance Global Enterprises, handing the executive leadership over to Victoria Cross while establishing a massive family trust fund for Leo and Lily.

For six months, life was peaceful. Leo excelled in school, earning accolades in mathematics and chess, while Lily celebrated her third birthday with a grand party in the mansion's sunlit gardens.

However, peace in the high-stakes world of international finance is often an illusion.

One evening in late May, Arthur and Leo were sitting in the library reviewing plans for the new Anna Vance Children's Hospital. Sarah entered the room, looking pale and holding an encrypted tablet.

"Arthur, we have a major problem," Sarah said, setting the tablet on the mahogany table.

Arthur looked up, frowning. "What is it, Sarah?"

"Over the last forty-eight hours, an anonymous offshore hedge fund called Aegis Capital has launched a hostile takeover bid against Vance Global Enterprises," Sarah explained quickly. "They've secretly bought up twenty-eight percent of our publicly traded shares."

Arthur's eyes narrowed. "Twenty-eight percent? How is that possible without our compliance board detecting it?"

"They used dozens of shell companies across Panama and Luxembourg to bypass regulatory flags," Sarah revealed. "And there's more... Aegis Capital is being backed by a silent partner who just injected two hundred million dollars in liquidity into their acquisition fund."

Leo leaned over to look at the financial data on the tablet. His sharp eyes scanned the transaction logs, noticing a peculiar pattern in the routing codes.

"Grandpa, look at these routing signatures," Leo pointed to the screen. "The intermediary bank used for the liquidity transfer is Belmont Private Bank in London."

Arthur stared at the name, his breath catching in his throat. "Belmont... Lord Edward Belmont."

"Who is Edward Belmont?" Leo asked, sensing the sudden tension in the room.

Arthur stood up, walking toward the grand window overlooking the gardens, his face grim. "Edward Belmont was my greatest rival thirty years ago. He tried to destroy Vance Global in the nineties, but I managed to ruin his financial empire in Europe. He swore he would get his revenge before he died."

"Do you think Julian was working with him?" Sarah asked.

"Julian was ambitious, but he didn't have the international connections to pull off something this sophisticated," Arthur said thoughtfully. "Julian was just a pawn. Belmont was the one who funded Julian's legal defense... and Belmont is the one trying to finish what Julian started."

Suddenly, Arthur's phone rang. It was an unknown international number. Arthur placed the call on speakerphone.

"Hello, Arthur," a smooth, cultured British voice echoed through the speaker, dripping with icy malice. "It has been a very long time."

"Belmont," Arthur said, his voice cold as steel.

"I see you're admiring my recent purchases," Belmont chuckled softly. "Vance Global is weak, Arthur. You retired, leaving the company vulnerable. By next Friday's shareholder meeting, Aegis Capital will hold fifty-one percent of the voting stock. I will strip Vance Global of every asset, bankrupt your family name, and throw your precious grandchildren back onto the street where they belong."

"You won't succeed, Edward," Arthur declared firmly.

"Oh, but I already have," Belmont replied smoothly. "And tell your bright young grandson, Leo... that his mother was very close to stopping me ten years ago before I tipped Julian off about her discoveries. Anna was a worthy opponent. It's a pity she met such an unfortunate end."

Leo's eyes burned with cold rage as he stepped closer to the phone. "My name is Leo Vance," he said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that made even Arthur look at him in surprise. "You made a mistake calling this house."

A moment of silence hung on the line before Belmont laughed softly. "A child threatening me? How amusing. Enjoy your remaining week of luxury, little boy. The clock is ticking."

The call went dead.

Leo looked at his grandfather, his expression devoid of fear, filled only with intense, tactical focus. "He thinks he's playing chess with an old man and a kid, Grandpa. Let's show him how wrong he is.
