Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Three months had passed since the dramatic night of Julian Vance's arrest. Winter had firmly gripped Boston, covering the grand estate in a thick blanket of pristine white snow.
Life inside the Vance mansion had transformed completely. The once cold and solemn halls were now filled with the sound of laughter and small running feet. Lily had gained weight, her cheeks were rosy and healthy, and she spent her days playing with a mountain of toys in a brightly painted nursery.
Leo had adjusted remarkably well. He was enrolled in a prestigious private academy, where his sharp intelligence and street-smart instincts quickly made him one of the top students in his grade. Arthur ensured that Leo and Lily lacked nothing, surrounding them with love, security, and top-tier tutors.
On a bright Tuesday morning, Arthur sat at the head of the dining table, watching Leo read through a daily newspaper while eating breakfast.
"You read the financial section first now?" Arthur asked with a warm chuckle, sipping his dark coffee.
"I like knowing how things work," Leo replied, looking up with a grin. "Plus, I want to make sure Vance Global stays strong."
Arthur's smile broadened, but a flicker of concern lingered behind his eyes. "Speaking of Vance Global, the board of directors has finally finalized the transition. With Julian behind bars awaiting trial, I am officially reinstating your mother's name on the corporate charter. The new charity foundation for underprivileged youth will be named the Anna Vance Memorial Fund."
"Mom would have loved that," Leo said softly, his eyes sparkling.
Just then, Sarah entered the dining room holding a leather briefcase. Her expression was serious.
"Good morning, Arthur. Leo," Sarah said, taking a seat at the table. "We have an update regarding Julian's legal proceedings."
Arthur's smile vanished. "Has the trial date been set?"
"It has," Sarah said, lowering her voice. "However, Julian's defense attorney, Richard Sterling, has filed several motions. Sterling is one of the most ruthless defense lawyers in the country. He's arguing that the black notebook is inadmissible as evidence, claiming it was tampered with by a minor—meaning Leo."
Leo set his fork down, his eyes narrowing. "I didn't tamper with anything. It's Mom's handwriting."
"We know that, Leo," Sarah reassured him gently. "But Sterling is playing dirty. He's also questioning Arthur's legal guardianship over you and Lily."
Arthur slammed his coffee cup onto the saucer. "He's doing WHAT?"
"Sterling claims that because Anna was officially listed as a missing person without a formal death certificate, Arthur cannot legally claim custody of you two without a lengthy, contested court hearing," Sarah explained. "Julian's legal team is trying to force the court to place you and Lily into state custody until the trial ends."
"Over my dead body!" Arthur spat, his eyes blazing with fury. "I am their grandfather! I will spend every penny I own to keep them safe!"
"They're trying to destabilize you, Arthur," Sarah warned. "They know that if they threaten to take the children, you might be forced to agree to a plea deal that lets Julian walk free without serving prison time."
Leo felt a knot of dread tie itself in his stomach. He looked down at his hands, remembering the cold, terrifying days before they found the bakery. The thought of being separated from Lily and thrown into state group homes terrified him far more than Julian ever could.
"They won't take us," Leo said firmly, looking up at his grandfather. "We fought to get here. We aren't going anywhere."
Arthur reached across the table and squeezed Leo's hand tightly. "You're right, Leo. We fight."
Later that afternoon, while Arthur was in his study preparing strategy with his legal team, Leo took Lily out to the grand garden to build a snowman. As Lily giggled, packing snow into small balls, Leo noticed a sleek black sedan parked on the public street just outside the estate's heavy iron gates.
The driver was wearing dark sunglasses, staring intently through binoculars straight at Leo and Lily.
Leo stood up slowly, positioning himself directly between the sedan and his sister. The car stayed there for another minute before speeding off into the snowy street, leaving tire tracks in the slush.

Leo realized that even behind prison bars, Julian's reach was long and dangerous. The battle for their family was turning into an all-out war.
