Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Before Julian could lay a hand on Leo, Arthur moved with surprising speed for his age. He stepped firmly between Julian and the boy, slamming his heavy hand against Julian's chest and forcing him back.

"Touch him again, Julian, and I will have you thrown off this property in handcuffs!" Arthur roared, his voice echoing through the high ceilings of the study.

"Arthur, he's manipulating you!" Julian spat, trying to regain his composure while adjusting his tie. "It's a fake! A manufactured book designed to blackmail us!"

"Let me see it, Leo," Arthur said softly, turning around and kneeling in front of his grandson.

Leo handed the damp black notebook to his grandfather. Arthur's hands trembled as he opened the leather cover. There, on the yellowed title page, was Anna's distinct, elegant handwriting: Property of Anna Vance – Evidence of Fraud at Vance Global.

Arthur flipped through the pages. Detailed financial entries, bank account numbers in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, forged signatures, and fraudulent contracts filled the notebook. All of them pointed directly to Julian Vance.

As Arthur read, his face transformed from grief to towering rage.

"Ten years..." Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of pain and anger. "Ten years I spent crying for my daughter. Ten years I blamed myself for driving her away. And all this time, it was you."

"Arthur, listen to me—" Julian started, backing toward the door.

"You framed her!" Arthur shouted, slamming the notebook onto his desk. "You forged her signature on those embezzlement files! You made her look like a criminal so she would flee for her life, all so you could take control of the company's expansion funds!"

"She was going to destroy everything I built!" Julian snapped, his polite persona completely shattering. "You always favored her! You were going to make her CEO, passing me over after I gave thirty years of my life to Vance Global! She deserved what she got!"

Leo felt a cold chill run down his spine. "You killed her," Leo whispered loudly. "You made her live in the freezing cold until she got sick and couldn't get better!"

"I didn't force her to stay in the slums!" Julian sneered maliciously. "She chose to hide! She could have given up the book, but she was stubborn—just like you!"

Just then, the study door swung wide open. Sarah stepped inside, accompanied by two armed officers from the Boston Police Department, along with the mansion's chief of security, whom Sarah had alerted outside.

"Mr. Arthur Vance," Sarah said calmly. "The police are here. I provided them with the digital copies of the offshore transactions I pulled from the server logs ten minutes ago, confirming the entries in Anna's journal."

Julian froze, staring at the police officers in utter disbelief. "Sarah... you treacherous bitch..."

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and grand larceny," the lead police officer announced, stepping forward with handcuffs ready. "You have the right to remain silent..."

"This isn't over, Arthur!" Julian screamed as the officers grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "You think these street rats are going to save your legacy? They're nothing! You'll see! You'll all pay for this!"

Julian struggled violently as the officers dragged him down the hallway and out into the stormy night. His echoing curses gradually faded into the distance.

Silence fell over the study.

Arthur slowly dropped to his knees in front of Leo and Lily. Tears streamed freely down the old man's face. He reached out and wrapped his arms around both children, pulling them tight against his chest.

"I'm so sorry," Arthur sobbed quietly into Leo's hair. "I'm so, so sorry I wasn't there to protect her... to protect you."

Leo felt the heavy wall around his heart finally begin to crumble. He wrapped his small arms around his grandfather's neck, burying his face in Arthur's shoulder.

"We're here now, Grandpa," Leo whispered softly. "We're here."

For the first time in ten years, the dark cloud hovering over the Vance estate seemed to clear. But as the police sirens faded into the rain, Leo knew that exposing Julian was only the beginning of their battle. Julian had powerful allies in the city, and the fight for Anna's children was far from over.
