Chapter 7 - The Mysterious Benefactor

The threat of losing custody hovered over the Vance mansion like a dark cloud. Richard Sterling, Julian's high-powered defense attorney, was relentlessly pressing the family court judge to remove Leo and Lily from Arthur's custody, citing unresolved corporate conflict and security risks.

To make matters worse, strange occurrences began happening around the estate. Unmarked cars were frequently spotted lingering near the gates, and Vance Global's stock prices were taking a beating due to engineered leaks to the press about internal instability.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Arthur was called to an emergency meeting at the family court downtown. Leo insisted on coming along. He wore a crisp dark suit that made him look remarkably like a young prince, his demeanor quiet, watchful, and determined.

Inside the grand marble corridors of the courthouse, Arthur's legal team was locked in tense discussions. Richard Sterling, a slick man with silver hair, sharp teeth, and a posture like a predator, walked up to them with a smirking grin.

"Mr. Vance," Sterling said smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. "It's a shame we have to meet under such unpleasant circumstances. You could end all of this today."

"Get out of my face, Sterling," Arthur said coldly.

"Think about the children, Arthur," Sterling whispered, leaning in closer. "A bitter, public custody battle will drag Anna's name through the mud. The press will dig into her years on the street. Do you really want her legacy exposed to cheap tabloids? If you drop the criminal charges against Julian and transfer his corporate shares back to him, he will gladly drop the custody challenge. The kids stay with you. Everyone wins."

Leo stepped forward before Arthur could answer, his young voice ringing clearly down the marble hallway. "My mother spent ten years hiding in the cold because of Julian. She died protecting us from him. We will never make a deal with a snake like you."

Sterling looked down at the ten-year-old boy, surprised by the intensity in Leo's dark eyes. His smirk faltered slightly. "Spunky kid. But courtrooms aren't won with speechmaking, boy. They are won with leverage."

Before Sterling could say another word, the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom opened, and a woman in an elegant ivory business suit stepped out. She was accompanied by a team of four high-powered attorneys carrying thick leather briefcases.

The woman had sharp, striking features, dark hair styled in a sleek bob, and an aura of absolute authority.

"Speaking of leverage, Richard," the woman said in a clear, commanding voice. "Perhaps you'd like to test yours against mine?"

Sterling's face drained of color. "Victoria? What are you doing here?"

Arthur gasped in surprise. "Victoria Cross?"

Victoria Cross was the founder and CEO of Cross Holdings, one of the most powerful financial conglomerates in North America, and a legendary figure in corporate law. She was notorious for destroying her opponents in court.

"I am here as the legal representative and co-trustee of the Anna Vance Estate," Victoria said calmly, stepping alongside Arthur and Leo.

"What?" Sterling stuttered. "Anna Vance had no estate! She was penniless!"

Victoria smiled coldly, pulling a signed, sealed document from her briefcase. "Ten years ago, before Anna disappeared, she didn't just hide from Julian—she entrusted me with a silent partnership share in Cross Holdings, funded by her personal inheritance. Under the terms of that trust, if Anna passed away, her full legal guardianship rights and her massive financial assets automatically transfer to a joint custody agreement between Arthur Vance and myself."

Sterling looked horrified. "This is impossible! You're bluffing!"

"Feel free to read the signed court filing, Richard," Victoria said smoothly, handing a copy to the judge's clerk who had just stepped out into the hall. "I have already filed a motion with the Supreme Court judge. Any attempt to remove these children from Arthur Vance's custody will be met with a ten-billion-dollar lawsuit against you personally, your law firm, and Julian Vance for malicious prosecution and child harassment."

Sterling took the document, his hands shaking as he scanned the official seals. Without another word, he turned on his heel and hurried down the corridor toward his associate.

Arthur looked at Victoria in utter amazement. "Victoria... I don't understand. Anna never told me she contacted you."

Victoria turned to Arthur, her expression softening into a genuine, warm smile. She knelt down in front of Leo, reaching out to gently touch the silver pendant around his neck.

"Your mother was the smartest woman I ever met, Leo," Victoria said softly, a tear glistening in her eye. "She knew that if anything happened to her, Julian would use every dirty trick in the book to take everything from you. She made me promise that when the time came, I would step out of the shadows and protect her children."

Leo looked at the powerful woman standing beside them, feeling a massive weight lift off his chest. "Thank you," he whispered.

"Don't thank me yet, Leo," Victoria said, standing up and looking down the dark corridor. "We've won the custody battle. Now, we go to war to put Julian in prison forever.
