Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Rain had begun to fall again, soaking the manicured gardens behind the Vance estate. Leo hid with Lily inside a stone gazebo tucked deep within the estate's private hedge maze. Lily was shivering, clinging to Leo's waist while he hugged her tight, shielding the black notebook inside his jacket.
"Leo, where is Grandpa?" Lily whimpered softly.
"He's coming back soon, Lil. We just have to hide until he gets home," Leo reassured her, though his own hands were shaking.
From the direction of the main house, flashlights cut through the gloom. Julian had mobilized three of the estate's private security guards, claiming that Leo had stolen something precious and dangerous from his personal safe.
"Search the gardens!" Julian's sharp voice echoed through the wet night air. "Find those kids before Arthur gets back!"
Leo realized he couldn't stay in the maze forever. He needed to get the black notebook to his grandfather before Julian intercepted Arthur. If Julian reached Arthur first, he would spin a web of lies, framing Leo as a troubled street kid stealing from the family.
"Come on, Lily," Leo whispered. "We have to move."
Keeping low, Leo led his sister through the shadows of the hedges, avoiding the sweeping beams of flashlight. They managed to slip toward the secondary entrance near the garage complex. Just as they reached the side wall, a dark figure stepped out from behind a tall oak tree.
Leo gasped and pulled Lily behind him, preparing to fight.
"Shh! Quiet, both of you!" a woman's low voice hissed.
It wasn't a guard. It was Sarah, Arthur's young personal executive assistant, who had driven to the estate to drop off urgent board documents. She held an umbrella over them, her face pale with concern.
"Leo, what's going on out here? Why is security hunting for you?" Sarah asked softly.
Leo looked into her eyes, searching for any sign of betrayal. "Uncle Julian lies. He drove my mother away ten years ago. And he wants this." Leo pulled out the black notebook just enough for her to see the leather cover.
Sarah's eyes widened. "Anna's ledger... Oh my God. Arthur told me about this years ago, but we thought it was destroyed."
"Julian wants to destroy it!" Leo said fiercely. "He tried to grab me!"
"Listen to me," Sarah whispered quickly, looking back toward the garden paths where voices were approaching. "Your grandfather's car just pulled into the front gates. Julian is waiting for him at the main entrance right now to spin his story. You need to get into the house through the basement access before Julian turns Arthur against you."
"Can I trust you?" Leo asked directly.
"Your mother was my closest friend before she disappeared," Sarah said, tears welling in her eyes. "I've been waiting ten years to expose what Julian did to this family. Go now!"
She pointed toward a cellar storm door hidden behind heavy ivy bushes. Leo didn't hesitate. He grabbed Lily's hand and slipped down the concrete steps into the mansion's subterranean level.
The basement was cool, damp, and lit by faint yellow bulb fixtures hanging from the stone ceiling. Leo navigated through rooms filled with vintage wine racks, old furniture, and heating pipes until he reached the internal staircase that led directly up to Arthur's private study on the ground floor.
Above him, he could hear muffled, heated arguments.
Leo crept up the wooden steps and cracked open the door that led into Arthur's study. Through the gap, he could see Arthur standing by his grand mahogany desk, looking exhausted and bewildered. Julian stood across from him, gesturing wildly.
"Arthur, you have to listen to reason!" Julian shouted, putting on an act of deep distress. "The boy is unhinged! He went into Anna's old room, smashed furniture, and stole confidential financial documents from my personal briefcase! When I tried to calm him down, he attacked me and ran off into the storm with the toddler!"
Arthur rubbed his temples, looking utterly heartbroken. "I can't believe Leo would do that... he was so quiet, so protective of his sister..."
"He was raised on the streets, Arthur!" Julian pressed hard, taking a step closer. "He's ruthless, cunning, and probably conditioned by street gangs to extract money from you! We need to send them both to a secure youth facility immediately before he ruins this family further!"
Arthur sat down heavily in his leather chair, head in his hands. "No... no, there must be an explanation..."
"There is no other explanation!" Julian insisted, raising his voice. "He's dangerous!"
"He's a liar!"
Leo slammed the study door wide open and stepped into the room, soaked with rain, his boots leaving muddy prints on the oriental rug. Lily stood right beside him, clutching his coat.
Arthur jumped up from his chair. "Leo!"
"Grandpa, don't listen to him!" Leo cried out, holding the black notebook high in the air. "I didn't steal anything from his briefcase! I found this under the floorboards in my mother's room—where she hid it ten years ago before Julian chased her away!"

Julian's face turned an ugly, violent shade of purple. "Give me that, you little thief!" he roared, lunging forward to snatch the book.
