Chapter 18 - Ties That Bind

As the years rolled smoothly by, the Vance estate continued to be a place of warmth, growth, and deep family connection.

Leo was now fourteen years old, attending a top preparatory academy where he served as student body president and captain of the debate team. His brilliant mind, combined with his unique life experience, made him a natural leader. Yet, despite his academic and social success, Leo remained remarkably humble, spending his weekends volunteering at the Anna Vance Children's Hospital.

Lily was now seven, a sweet, creative young girl who excelled at playing the piano and riding horses at the estate's stables. She adored her big brother, following him everywhere around the grounds whenever he was home from school.

One sunny afternoon in early July, the family gathered on the grand outdoor patio overlooking the rolling hills of the estate for Arthur's seventy-fifth birthday celebration.

The patio was decorated with white flowers, hanging lights, and long dining tables filled with delicious food prepared by Mrs. Gable. Victoria Cross, Sarah, and several close family friends were in attendance, filling the air with cheerful conversation and laughter.

Arthur sat at the head of the table, looking around at his family with profound contentment. Though his hair was entirely silver now, his eyes were bright, filled with energy and deep joy.

Leo stood up from his seat, raising his glass of ginger ale to make a toast.

"I'd like to say a few words for Grandpa," Leo said, his voice ringing clearly across the patio.

The guests quieted down, smiling as they turned to listen to the handsome fourteen-year-old young man.

"Four years ago," Leo began, looking warmly at Arthur, "my sister and I were lost in the cold, searching for a crumb of bread and a place to hide. We stumbled into a bakery, terrified and broken. But that day, we didn't just find food... we found our home."

Arthur smiled warmly, his eyes glistening with tears.

"Grandpa took us in, fought for us, loved us, and taught us what it truly means to be a family," Leo continued, his voice full of genuine emotion. "He showed us that real strength isn't about power or money—it's about protecting the people you love. Happy seventy-fifth birthday, Grandpa. You are our hero."

The guests applauded enthusiastically, clinking their glasses together.

Arthur stood up, wrapping Leo in a tight, affectionate embrace, before pulling seven-year-old Lily onto his knee.

"Thank you, Leo," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "You and Lily are the greatest gifts God ever gave me. Seeing you both grow into such kind, strong, and compassionate young people is the greatest joy of my life."

Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the stars lit up the clear night sky, Leo walked down to the edge of the estate's private lake. The cool summer breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees, sending soft ripples across the dark water reflecting the bright full moon.

Arthur walked down the stone path, joining his grandson by the water's edge.

"Thinking about the future, Leo?" Arthur asked gently, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"A little bit," Leo smiled, looking out at the lake. "I was thinking about where I want to go to university in a few years. I want to study law and business, Grandpa. I want to take over Vance Global one day and keep using it to help people."

Arthur looked at Leo with immense pride. "You will be a far better leader than I ever was, Leo. The company... and this family... will be in the best possible hands."
