Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Attic

The morning sun streamed through the high windows of the Vance mansion, but the atmosphere inside remained tense. Within twenty-four hours of their arrival, Arthur had brought in top pediatricians to examine Lily and hired private tutors for Leo. He spared no expense, determined to give his long-lost grandchildren everything they had been deprived of.
However, behind the luxurious curtains, a storm was brewing.
Leo spent his days adapting to the overwhelming wealth, but his mind never relaxed. He spent hours exploring the endless corridors of the sprawling estate, keeping a sharp eye on the staff and especially on his uncle Julian.
On their fourth afternoon at the mansion, Arthur had to leave for an emergency board meeting at Vance Global Enterprises.
"Julian will be managing the house while I'm away at the office," Arthur told Leo at breakfast, patting his shoulder. "If you need anything, just ask Mrs. Gable."
As soon as Arthur's car pulled out of the driveway, the atmosphere in the mansion shifted noticeably. The servants moved more quietly, and Julian's friendly facade completely vanished.
While Lily was taking a nap with Mrs. Gable reading her a storybook, Leo slipped out of his bedroom. He remembered something his mother had whispered to him during her final days in their cramped, cold apartment in the city slums.
"If anything ever happens to me, Leo, go back to where it all began. In the old house... under the floorboards where the sun hits the clock."
Leo knew his mother grew up in this very mansion. He needed to find her old room.
He navigated the labyrinthine hallways of the third floor, where the older, unused guest rooms were located. Most doors were locked, but near the far end of the west wing, he found a brass doorknob shaped like a rose. He turned it, and the door creaked open.
The room was preserved exactly as Anna had left it ten years ago. Dust motes danced in the pale light filtering through sheer curtains. A grand four-poster bed sat against the wall, surrounded by bookshelves filled with classic literature, painted canvases, and framed photographs.
Leo walked softly across the hardwood floor. In the corner stood a tall grandfather clock, its pendulum frozen in time. Sunbeams poured through the window, illuminating a specific floorboard right in front of the clock's base.
Heart pounding, Leo knelt down. He pushed his fingers into the narrow gap between the oak boards. One of the planks was loose. With a firm pry, the board popped up.
Inside the dark hollow lay a thick, leather-bound black notebook, wrapped tightly in oilskin to protect it from moisture.
Leo reached in and pulled it out. As he unwrapped the oilskin, pages filled with his mother's crisp, neat handwriting appeared, alongside pasted financial documents, bank statements, and secret ledger entries.
"What do we have here?" a cold, mocking voice suddenly echoed from the doorway.
Leo jumped, instantly hiding the book behind his back as he spun around.
Julian Vance stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his arms crossed. A dark, terrifying smile stretched across his face.
"You're just like your mother, boy," Julian said, stepping slowly into the room and closing the door behind him with a soft click. "Always snooping where you don't belong."
"This was my mother's room!" Leo demanded, backing up against the grandfather clock. "Get away from me!"
"Your mother was a fool," Julian sneered, advancing with heavy, deliberate steps. "She thought she could ruin me. She found out I was transferring company funds into offshore accounts, and she tried to take her findings to Arthur. But I made sure Arthur thought SHE was the thief. I chased her out of this house with nothing but the clothes on her back."
Leo's eyes burned with fury. "You lied to Grandpa! You made her live in poverty!"
"And she died in poverty," Julian hissed, reaching out with a sudden, vicious speed to grab Leo's arm. "Now, give me that notebook!"
"No!" Leo yelled.
Though he was only ten, living on the streets had made Leo fast and resilient. He slammed his elbow hard into Julian's ribs. Julian gasped in pain, his grip slipping. Leo ducked under his arm, sprinted past him, and yanked the heavy oak door open.
"Get back here, you little rat!" Julian roared, turning to chase him.
Leo sprinted down the long hallway, holding the black notebook tight against his chest. His heart hammered in his ears as he heard Julian's heavy footsteps gaining on him. He didn't know where to run—the mansion was huge, and Arthur was miles away at corporate headquarters.
Reaching the central staircase, Leo saw Mrs. Gable holding Lily at the bottom of the stairs.
"Leo! What's wrong dear?" Mrs. Gable cried out.
"Mrs. Gable! Lock the door!" Leo screamed as he flew down the stairs.
Julian appeared at the top of the landing, smoothing his suit jacket, his expression instantly shifting back to one of calm authority.
"Mrs. Gable, hold that boy," Julian called out smoothly. "He's experiencing an emotional breakdown and took something valuable from my office. He needs to be confined to his room until Arthur returns."
Mrs. Gable looked confused, looking back and forth between the terrified, panting boy and the cold, commanding vice president.

Leo knew he couldn't trust anyone fully yet. Holding his sister's hand, he whispered, "Run!" and pulled her toward the heavy double doors of the mansion's rear garden exit.
