Chapter 10 - THE SHOWDOWN IN ROOM 216

At 9:00 AM, Committee Room 216 of the Rayburn Building was packed to maximum capacity. Dozens of news cameras were lined up along the back gallery, broadcasting live to millions of homes across the nation.
Senator Richard Hayes sat at the head of the high wooden dais, his expensive suit immaculate, his smile confident as he tapped his wooden gavel to bring the morning session to order.
"This hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding defense logistics oversight will now come to order," Hayes announced smoothly into his microphone. "Before we begin, let us hold a moment of silence for Major Daniel Carter and the brave men who lost their lives in last month's tragic convoy incident—"
The heavy oak doors at the back of the committee room swung open with a loud *BANG*.
Every camera turned instantly toward the rear entrance.
Walking down the center aisle past stunned reporters and security personnel was Rachel Carter, holding Emily's hand tightly. Beside her walked Staff Sergeant Nate Walker, his arm suspended in a crisp white sling, his dress uniform pristine despite the blood soaked through his bandages beneath. Following right behind them was Judge Elizabeth Vance and a squad of Federal Marshals.
Senator Hayes’s confident smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer terror.
"Security! Arrest those people!" Hayes shouted into his microphone, his voice cracking with sudden panic. "They are wanted fugitives!"
"STAND DOWN!" Judge Elizabeth Vance’s voice cut through the room like a steel whip as she stepped down the aisle, holding an official federal warrant high in her hand. "By order of the United States District Court, this hearing is suspended! I am presenting direct forensic evidence of treason, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder against Senator Richard Hayes and Colonel Arthur Vance!"
The committee room erupted into complete chaos. Camera flashes erupted like lightning, reporters began screaming questions, and senators on the panel scrambled backward in shock.
Rachel walked right up to the witness podium, facing the high dais where the man who had ordered her husband's death sat trembling.
"You delivered the eulogy for my husband, Senator," Rachel said into the center microphone, her voice firm, clear, and resonant across the national broadcast. "You stood in front of national television and called him a hero while knowing you sold the weapons that killed him."
Nate stepped up beside her, setting Daniel's leather journal and the decrypted laptop onto the evidence table. "Major Daniel Carter logged every transaction, Senator. His blood is on your hands, and your reign is over."
Federal Marshals stepped onto the dais, surrounding Senator Hayes.
"Richard Hayes, you are under arrest," the Lead Marshal declared, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around the senator's wrists in front of thirty live news cameras.
As Hayes was led away in disgrace, shouting obscenities at the reporters, Rachel looked down at Emily, who was clutching Daniel's dog tags tightly.
