Chapter 5 - THE ESCAPE FROM SHADOWS

The wooden back door of the cabin blew inward with a deafening crash as a stun grenade detonated in the kitchen, filling the hallway with blinding white light and disorienting noise.
Emily screamed in terror as Rachel threw her body over the child on the bedroom floor, covering her ears.
"STAY DOWN!" Nate roared through the smoke. He blind-fired his handgun through the drywall, forcing the incoming mercenaries to retreat back into the hallway.
Nate kicked open the small wooden trapdoor hidden beneath the bedroom rug, revealing a narrow storm cellar tunnel leading out to the woods. "Rachel! Get Emily down into the crawlspace! GO!"
Rachel didn't hesitate. She lifted the crying girl and lowered her into the dark, damp cellar floor, then scrambled down behind her. Nate dropped down last, slamming the heavy wooden trapdoor shut and locking it with an iron slide bolt just as heavy automatic gunfire tore through the floorboards above them.
"This way! Move fast!" Nate hissed, guiding them through the narrow dirt tunnel with his flashlight beam.
They crawled through forty yards of cold, mud-slicked tunnel until they emerged into a concealed drainage culvert forty feet down the wooded ridge. The cold autumn rain was pouring down in torrents, soaking them to the skin instantly.
In the distance behind them, the safe house erupted into a fireball as the mercenaries detonated demolition charges to destroy any remaining evidence.
"My daddy's ring!" Emily sobbed as Rachel dragged her through the thick brush. "Mommy, did we leave Daddy's ring?"
"I have it, baby! I have it right here!" Rachel reassured her, clutching her purse tightly against her chest as they scrambled down the muddy slope.
Nate led them to a rusted 1998 Ford pickup truck hidden beneath a camouflage tarp in a ravine half a mile away. He ripped the tarp off, unlocked the doors, and motioned for them to get inside.
"They'll have roadblocks set up on the main highway within ten minutes," Nate said, hot-wiring the ignition. The old engine sputtered to life with a loud rumble. "We can't use public roads, and we can't trust anyone in uniform."
"Where can we possibly go?" Rachel asked, her teeth chattering from cold and terror as she wrapped a dry wool blanket around Emily in the passenger seat. "If Vance and Senator Hayes control the military and the police, we're completely trapped."
Nate turned the truck onto an unpaved logging road, navigating the dark terrain without headlights to avoid detection. "There’s one person who can help us. Someone outside their chain of command."
"Who?"
"Captain Sarah Chen," Nate replied. "She was Daniel's legal officer in the JAG corps. She resigned six months ago after trying to investigate corporate corruption in military logistics. She's living in Richmond, working as a federal whistleblower attorney."
Rachel looked out the rain-streaked window into the pitch-black woods. She knew that every step they took was dragging her innocent daughter deeper into a lethal political conspiracy. But looking back was no longer an option. Daniel had died for this truth, and she would burn the world down before she let his killers walk free.

"Call her," Rachel said, her voice dropping all trace of panic, replaced by cold, hard resolve. "Tell her Major Daniel Carter's family is coming."
