Chapter 13 - THE AFTERMATH OF STORM

Two weeks later, the air was crisp and clear over Arlington National Cemetery. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue as row upon row of white marble headstones stood in perfect alignment across the rolling green hills.
A full military honors funeral was finally taking place for Major Daniel Carter.
The formal ceremony was magnificent. A military brass band played softly in the distance as seven uniformed guards fired a crisp three-volley rifle salute into the afternoon air. High above, four F-35 fighter jets flew in formation overhead, with one jet peeling off sharply into the clouds—the solemn 'missing man' formation.
Rachel stood at the front of the gathering wearing a simple black dress, her face calm, serene, and free of the agonizing dread that had plagued her for months. Beside her, Emily wore a neat purple coat, clutching her mother's hand tightly.
Nate stood beside them in his pristine Army dress blues, decorated with the Silver Star medal he had been awarded three days prior for his extraordinary heroism in saving Daniel's life and exposing the Blacklight conspiracy.
An Army General stepped forward, carefully folding the American flag that had covered Daniel's casket into a crisp triangle. The General knelt down before Rachel, presenting the folded flag with solemn reverence.
"On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Army, and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a token of our appreciation for your husband's honorable and faithful service."
Rachel accepted the flag, pressing it against her heart, tears flowing silently down her cheeks—not tears of pure despair, but tears of profound pride and deep, lasting closure.
After the official crowd dispersed, Rachel, Emily, and Nate remained alone by the fresh headstone.
Emily walked up to the white marble marker, which read:
*MAJOR DANIEL CARTER*
*BELOVED HUSBAND AND FATHER*
*HERO OF THE NATION*
Emily knelt down, placing her handmade purple poster board sign—the one from the airport—neatly against the base of the stone. She leaned forward and kissed the top of the marble.

"I love you, Daddy," Emily whispered softly. "We brought you home."
