Chapter 16 - THE LIGHT THAT STAYS

The afternoon sun was warm as Rachel walked through the quiet rooms of her house. Sunlight poured through the clean windows, illuminating framed photographs lining the hallway wall.
There was the old photograph of Daniel grinning at the county fair. Beside it was a new photograph taken at the spring concert—Emily holding her violin, flanked by Rachel and Nate, all three of them laughing together under the blooming cherry blossom trees.
Rachel paused at the hallway table, picking up Daniel's leather journal. She opened it to the very last page, where she had written her own small message beneath Daniel's final words:
*You made it home, Daniel. Through Nate, through Emily, through the justice we fought for. You will never be forgotten.*
Nate walked into the hallway, carrying his coat. "Ready to go?"
"Where are we heading?" Rachel asked, closing the journal with a peaceful sigh.
"Emily said she wants strawberry waffles at the diner," Nate said with a warm chuckle. "And then she insists we go to the planetarium to check on Pluto."
Rachel laughed—a bright, genuine sound that filled the house with life. "Lead the way, Sergeant."
As they walked out the front door together into the warm spring sunshine, hand in hand, Rachel looked up at the sky. The moon was faintly visible in the bright blue afternoon air.
