Chapter 14 - MEMORIES WRITTEN IN GOLD

A month after the funeral, life in the Carter household began to slowly find a new, peaceful rhythm. The autumn leaves were falling softly across the green lawn, and the neighborhood was quiet.
Rachel sat on the front porch swing, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching Nate working in the backyard.
True to his promise, Nate had returned to help them rebuild. Armed with a wooden ladder, power tools, and stacks of fresh cedar planks, he was building the giant backyard treehouse that Daniel had sketched in his journal years ago.
Emily was standing at the base of the oak tree, proudly handing Nate wooden planks and nails, laughing as he made funny faces down at her.
Rachel watched them with a soft, warm smile. The agonizing void left by Daniel's physical absence would never fully vanish, but the violent darkness that had threatened to destroy them was gone forever. In its place was a quiet, steady healing.
Nate wiped his forehead with his sleeve and climbed down the ladder, walking over to the porch with Emily trailing happily behind him.
"Roof's almost done," Nate reported with a grin, setting his tool belt down. "Should be ready for official space station missions by sunset."
"Thank you, Nate," Rachel said softly, her eyes shining with warmth. "For everything."
Nate sat down on the porch step, looking out at the yard. "Daniel made me promise to take care of you guys. But the truth is... being here, helping you two... it saved my life, too, Rachel. I didn't know how to be a person after I got back. You gave me a home."
Emily sat down between them, grabbing Nate's hand and Rachel's hand, connecting them together. "Nate's family now, right Mommy?"
Rachel looked at Nate, seeing the genuine kindness, deep loyalty, and profound warmth in his eyes—the same noble spirit that her husband had died to save.

"Yes, baby," Rachel smiled gently, squeezing Nate's hand. "Nate is family now."
