Chapter 17 - SEEDS OF JUSTICE

The federal trial of former Senator Richard Hayes and the executive board of Aegis Apex Defense officially began six months later in the United States District Court. It became known in the press as the trial of the decade.
Rachel testified on the third day of the proceedings.
She walked into the crowded courtroom wearing a dark blue suit, her head held high, her posture radiant with quiet strength. She did not flinch when facing the defense attorneys, nor did she look away when speaking directly to the jury.
For two hours, Rachel delivered a calm, precise, and emotionally devastating account of her family's ordeal—from the day the officers knocked on her door to the night she held the encrypted drive over the storm drain in the Capitol utility tunnel.
When the prosecutor asked her why she risked her life to bring the files forward, Rachel looked directly at the jury box.
"My husband gave his life to protect his fellow soldiers," Rachel said, her voice clear and resonant. "He believed that honor, truth, and duty mattered more than personal safety. He couldn't come home to tell his story himself, so we came to tell it for him. Justice isn't just about punishing evil; it's about honoring the good."
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
The verdict was guilty on all counts: high treason, military corruption, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder. Richard Hayes was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
