Chapter 18 - HEALING WATERS

In the summer following the trial, Nate took Rachel and Emily on a trip to the serene shores of Lake Blue Ridge—a peaceful mountain retreat far removed from cities, courts, and military bases.
The lake water was clear and warm under the July sun. Pine trees lined the rocky shore, and the air smelled of sweet pine needles and fresh water.
Emily spent her afternoons learning how to fish off the wooden dock with Nate. Nate sat patiently beside her, showing her how to bait the line, cast into the deep water, and untangle her hooks with infinite patience.
Rachel sat on the porch of the lakeside cabin, watching them through binoculars, her heart overflowing with a quiet, peaceful warmth she hadn't felt in years.
That evening, as a deep purple sunset painted the sky, Nate and Rachel sat by a small campfire on the beach while Emily slept comfortably inside the cabin, tired from a long day of swimming.
The fire crackled softly, sending orange sparks dancing up into the starry night sky.
"I used to think about that valley every single day," Nate said quietly, staring into the flames. "I used to wake up sweating, hearing the gunfire, feeling the heat of the burning truck. I felt so much shame for surviving when Daniel didn't."
Rachel reached over, wrapping her hand over Nate's calloused fingers. "And now?"
Nate turned to look at her, his dark eyes reflected in the warm firelight. "Now when I think of Daniel, I don't see the fire in the canyon anymore. I see Emily's smile when she catches a fish. I see you standing tall in that courtroom. Daniel didn't just save my life, Rachel... he led me to the place where I belonged."

Rachel leaned in, placing a tender kiss against Nate's scarred cheek. "You belong here with us, Nate. You always will."
