Chapter 6 - THE WHISTLEBLOWER

The suburban row house in Richmond, Virginia, looked quiet and unassuming under the dim morning light. Captain Sarah Chen, a sharp-eyed woman in her late thirties with dark hair tied in a neat bun, stood at her kitchen island, staring at the military laptop Nate had set down in front of her.
"This is insane," Sarah whispered, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she verified the cryptographic signatures on the Project Blacklight files. "I knew Vance was dirty, but I had no idea Hayes was directing the offshore accounts."
Rachel sat at the table, drinking warm tea while Emily slept soundly on the nearby sofa, exhausted from the harrowing night escape.
"Is the evidence admissible in federal court?" Rachel asked, her voice raspy.
"Admissible?" Sarah looked up, her expression grave. "Rachel, this isn't just admissible—this is nuclear. It details illegal weapons transfers to hostile militia groups, murder of U.S. military personnel, and high treason. But that's also why it's so dangerous. Senator Hayes chairs the committee that oversees the Department of Justice. If we try to file a standard federal indictment, Hayes will know before the judge even signs the warrant."
Nate leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his broad chest. "Then how do we execute this without getting put in shallow graves first?"
"We don't go through the Department of Justice," Sarah said, closing the laptop with a decisive snap. "We go directly to the Director of the Congressional Oversight Committee, Judge Elizabeth Vance."
Rachel blinked. "Vance? Is she related to the Colonel?"
"She's his estranged sister," Sarah revealed, a small, cold smile appearing on her face. "And she hates his guts. She’s an incorruptible former federal prosecutor who has spent five years looking for a reason to put her brother behind bars. If we hand this drive directly to her at the Capitol building during tomorrow morning's live televised committee hearing, Hayes won't be able to suppress it. The whole world will see it live on national television."
Nate shook his head. "Getting into the Capitol building with a active kill-order on our heads is suicide, Sarah. Vance's private security team will be waiting at every entrance."
"Not if we create a distraction they can't ignore," Sarah replied. "Vance thinks you two are hiding in the mountains. He doesn't know you made it to Richmond. We use his own paranoia against him."
Suddenly, the glass in the front bay window shattered as a flash-bang grenade bounced onto the hardwood floor.
"INCOMING!" Nate shouted.
Before anyone could react, heavy combat boots kicked the front door off its hinges. Four heavily armed men wearing tactical gear without insignia rushed into the hallway, weapons raised.
"SECURE THE LAPTOP! KILL THE TARGETS!" a voice barked.
Nate charged forward like a bull, slamming his body into the lead operative, knocking him backward into the doorframe. He grabbed the operative's rifle barrel, forcing it upward as a burst of automatic fire tore into the ceiling plaster.
Sarah grabbed a hidden taser from her desk, firing it directly into the second operative's chest, sending him collapsing to the floor in violent spasms.
"RACHEL! RUN OUT THE BACK!" Nate yelled, struggling with the third operative in a brutal hand-to-hand combat display.
Rachel grabbed the laptop, snatched Emily into her arms, and sprinted down the back hallway toward the kitchen door. A fourth operative stepped out from the pantry, raising a silenced pistol directly at Rachel's chest.
"Drop the bag, lady," the mercenary sneered.
Before he could pull the trigger, a heavy iron frying pan smashed into the side of his face with a deafening *CLANG*. Sarah Chen stood behind him, holding the dented skillet with both hands, her eyes burning with fury.
"Out my back door! NOW!" Sarah shouted.
May you like
Rachel didn't look back. She shoved open the rear exit, carrying Emily into the alleyway where Sarah's backup vehicle was parked, the sounds of intense gunfire echoing behind them.
