Chapter 7 - THE TIGHTENING NET

Rain slicked the streets of Washington D.C. as dusk settled over the nation's capital. The city was a maze of concrete, police barricades, and flashing emergency lights. News broadcasts on every channel were running red banner alerts:
*BREAKING NEWS: FORMER SOLDIER NATHAN WALKER AND RACHEL CARTER WANTED IN CONNECTION TO DOMESTIC TERRORISM AND MILITARY THEFT. CONSIDERED ARMED AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.*
Sitting in the back of an underground parking garage inside a rental sedan, Rachel watched the news report on her phone screen with cold horror. They had framed Nate and her as rogue terrorists who had assassinated military officers and stolen state secrets.
"They're controlling the narrative," Rachel said, her hands shaking as she turned off the phone screen. "If anyone spots us on the street, the police will shoot us on sight."
Nate, who was wrapping a clean bandage around a gunshot graze on his forearm, looked out the rain-splattered windshield. Sarah Chen had managed to escape the Richmond ambush with minor bruises and was currently setting up contact with Judge Elizabeth Vance’s private security detail.
"They're desperate," Nate said, his voice cold and steady. "Vance knows tomorrow morning's committee hearing is his last chance to destroy the evidence. Once we get that drive to Judge Vance, his media propaganda won't matter."
Emily, sitting in the backseat, looked up at Nate. Her face was pale, but her eyes held a strange, mature calm that echoed her father's spirit.
"Nate?" Emily called out softly.
Nate turned his head. "Yeah, kiddo?"
"Are the bad men chasing us because of my daddy?"
Nate's heart hurt for her. He reached back, gently patting her small knee. "They're chasing us because your daddy was too brave to let them get away with doing bad things. And we're going to finish what he started."
Emily reached into her coat pocket and pulled out Daniel's titanium wedding ring, holding it out to Nate. "Daddy said rings are promises. He promised to protect us. You wear it now."
Nate stared at the small metal ring resting in the child's hand. Tears pricked at the corners of his dark eyes. He took the ring reverently and slipped it onto his pinky finger. "I promise you, Emily... I will get you and your mom through this alive."
Rachel looked at Nate, feeling a sudden, profound shift in her perception of the man. When she had met him at the airport, she had seen a broken messenger carrying painful grief. Now, she saw a guardian—a man whose loyalty to her late husband was absolute, unbreakable, and noble.
Sarah's encrypted phone buzzed on the dashboard. Nate picked it up instantly.
"Sarah? Are we set?"
"Judge Vance agreed to meet us secretly in the basement sub-level of the Rayburn House Office Building at 7:00 AM tomorrow," Sarah's voice came through the speaker, tight with tension. "She’s bringing her personal federal marshals. But getting into the Rayburn building requires passing through high-security checkpoints. Vance has stationed his Apex mercenaries at every public entrance disguised as Capitol security officers."
"How do we bypass them?" Nate asked.
"There's an old steam utility tunnel connecting the Union Station parking facility directly to the Rayburn sub-basement," Sarah replied. "It's been decommissioned since the nineties. It's dark, flooded, and filthy, but it bypasses all security checkpoints."

Nate looked back at Rachel and Emily. "Then that's our entry. We move at dawn."
