Chapter 1 - The Funeral Ambush and the Forged Will

The chapel was suffocating under the weight of hypocritical grief and expensive floral wreaths. My husband, Julian Vance, walked down the center aisle as if he owned the cathedral, his hand possessively resting on the lower back of his pregnant mistress, Vanessa Cole. Vanessa wore a tight black dress that accentuated her calculatedly rounded stomach, her eyes gleaming with the predatory thrill of an impending payout. My father, Arthur Sterling, lay in the polished mahogany casket at the front, his life's work as founder of Sterling Global Logistics abruptly cut short by a sudden heart failure that the doctors whispered was accelerated by deep stress—stress caused entirely by Julian's systematic betrayal.

Julian leaned down, his breath hot and stale against my ear, smelling faintly of the expensive scotch he had been drinking since 8 AM. 'You have nothing left, Claire,' he whispered, his voice dripping with sadistic glee. 'Your father is gone, the board despises you, and everything he built belongs to me now. Pack your bags by tonight.'

I didn't blink. I didn't cry. I simply looked at Vanessa, whose smug grin mirrored Julian's arrogance. 'You should hold on tighter,' I whispered back.

Her smile twitched. 'Excuse me?' she muttered.

Before she could press further, family lawyer Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian, thankfully—stepped up to the mahogany podium. He adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses, clearing his throat to silence the murmurs of the gathered executives, relatives, and board members.

'We are gathered today not only to mourn Arthur Sterling,' Marcus announced, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling, 'but also to execute the final legally binding provisions of his last will and testament, drafted and witnessed forty-eight hours before his passing.'

Julian straightened his tie, puffing out his chest with absolute certainty. Weeks ago, Julian had gloated about manipulating my father into signing a new corporate succession document while heavily medicated on post-surgery painkillers. He had assured his inner circle that Sterling Global Logistics would pass into a management trust controlled by the 'most qualified male executive'—himself.

Marcus unfolded the crisp parchment. 'The entire estate, including the primary residence, international investments, patents, and one hundred percent of the voting shares of Sterling Global Logistics, belongs solely and unconditionally to his beloved daughter, Claire Sterling.'

Absolute silence fell over the chapel, thick enough to suffocate. Julian's mistress released his arm so fast she nearly tripped over her own heels. Julian's face drained of color, his jaw dropping slack.

'That's impossible!' Julian roared, stepping violently forward, breaking the solemn decorum of the service. 'There was another document! A notarized amendment! Arthur signed it in his study!'%

Marcus stared down at him with cold, unyielding professional disdain. 'The document you are referring to, Julian, has been formally analyzed by handwriting experts and forensic accountants. It was forged. Furthermore, the authorities have already been notified of corporate document falsification.'

A heavy murmur rippled through the pews. Board members who had bowed to Julian just yesterday suddenly looked away, ducking their heads in terror.

Julian lunged toward me, his eyes wild with suppressed fury. 'You planned this! You poisoned his mind against me!'%

'No,' I said softly, standing up from the front pew, smoothing down my black wool coat. 'My father planned his inheritance.'%

I looked past him as two men from corporate security locked the side doors. 'I planned what comes next.'
