Chapter 9 - The DNA Test Result That Changes Everything

While my town car sped through the rain-slicked streets toward Sector 7, Marcus Vance sent an encrypted medical file to my phone. It was the rush-priority DNA test result I had secretly ordered earlier that morning regarding Vanessa Cole's unborn child.

I opened the encrypted PDF on my phone screen as the car navigated the dark, industrial wasteland of the docks. The results scrolled down: Candidate 1: Julian Vance — Probability of Paternity: 0.0% | Candidate 2: Viktor Vance — Probability of Paternity: 99.9%.

A dark, bitter laugh escaped my lips. Julian thought he was the master manipulator, flaunting his pregnant mistress at my father's funeral to break my spirit. In reality, Vanessa wasn't just Julian's mistress—she was Viktor Vance's sleeper agent, planted inside Julian's life to ensure complete control over Sterling Global Logistics from multiple angles.

Julian was nothing more than a disposable pawn in Viktor's grand chess game. And soon, the pawn was about to find out how easily chess players sacrifice their pieces.

My phone buzzed with an incoming call. It was Julian, calling from the holding cell phone bank downtown.

I answered immediately, pressing speaker. 'What do you want, Julian? Are you calling to complain about the jail food?'%

'Claire! You have to listen to me!' Julian's voice was frantic, bordering on hysterical. 'Viktor Vance... he lied to me! He promised me the company if I helped him frame your father, but the police detective just told me that my assets have been frozen and Vanessa has gone completely dark! She won't answer my calls!'%

'Oh, you mean your dear pregnant mistress?' I asked sweetly. 'Did you know that she isn't even carrying your child, Julian? DNA doesn't lie. The baby belongs to Viktor.'%

A dead silence echoed down the phone line, followed by a ragged, gasping breath. 'What... what did you say?'%

'You traded your marriage, your career, and your freedom for another man's pregnant girlfriend, Julian. Enjoy your cell. You earned every single square inch of it.'%

I hung up the phone before he could scream another word. The car came to a sudden, screeching halt in front of the rusted iron gates of the Sector 7 maritime warehouse.
