Chapter 20 - An Open Ending on the Horizon

Six months later, the private gardens of the Sterling estate were in full bloom, bathed in the golden warmth of a late afternoon sun. I stood on the stone balcony overlooking the expansive lawns, holding a cup of herbal tea, watching the fountains ripple in the breeze.

Sterling Global Logistics was stronger, cleaner, and more innovative than it had ever been in its forty-year history. Uncle Thomas served as chairman emeritus, mentoring a new generation of ethical executives, while Evelyn Thorne had officially taken over as our chief financial officer, locking down our global cybersecurity grid with unassailable precision.

Marcus Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh batch of international quarterly reports.

'European markets just closed up four percent, Claire,' Marcus said with a approving smile. 'We officially locked down the Berlin logistics contract this morning. Viktor's old syndicate is completely dissolved and buried.'%

'Good,' I replied softly, taking a sip of my tea. 'Never let down our guard, Marcus. Empires are built in decades, but they can be tested in a single day.'%

'I won't,' Marcus promised, turning to leave before pausing at the doorway. He looked back hesitantly. 'By the way... mail call came in a few minutes ago. There was a letter for you. Postmarked from the federal penitentiary downtown.'%

I didn't turn around immediately. I stood quietly, watching the wind rustle through the oak trees my father had planted when I was a little girl.

'Did you open it?' I asked.

'No,' Marcus replied. 'It's addressed to you. From Julian.'%

I turned around slowly, gazing down at the pristine white envelope resting on the outdoor mahogany table. The handwriting was messy, rushed, and trembling—unlike the sharp, arrogant signature he used to sign away my father's legacy.

I walked over, picking up the letter in my fingers. I didn't tear it open right away. Instead, I held it against the warm afternoon sunlight, wondering what words a broken man could possibly have left to say to the woman he had tried to destroy.

A faint, enigmatic smile touched my lips as I slipped the unopened letter into my coat pocket.
