Chapter 14 - The Trap Springs Shut: Arrest Warrant for Fraud

The final day of the trial arrived with the electric tension of a gathering hurricane. Outside the courthouse, protesters and news vans choked the streets, chanting slogans and holding up placards demanding justice for corporate corruption. Inside, the jury deliberated for a mere four hours before returning with their verdict.

Judge Sterling adjusted his glasses as the foreperson stood up, holding a crisp manila envelope containing the jury's findings.

'On the first count of international wire fraud and racketeering, how does the jury find the defendant, Viktor Vance?' the clerk asked.

'Guilty,' the foreperson answered clearly.

'On the second count of corporate extortion and document falsification, how do you find the defendant?'%

'Guilty.'%

'On all counts of conspiracy, money laundering, and intimidation, how do you find the defendant?'%

'Guilty on all counts, Your Honor.'%

A deafening roar of astonishment erupted through the gallery. Viktor sat frozen in his chair, staring straight ahead at nothing, his empire, his fortune, and his freedom evaporating in a matter of seconds. Julian, sitting in the co-defendant box, buried his face in his hands and began to weep uncontrollably.

Judge Sterling banged his gavel, his voice echoing with solemn authority. 'Viktor Vance, you are hereby sentenced to thirty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, alongside full forfeiture of all global assets. Julian Vance, in light of your cooperation and testimony, you are sentenced to five years with eligibility for parole in thirty-six months. Court is adjourned.'%

As the federal marshals swarmed Viktor, slapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists and dragging him away toward the holding cells, I stood up slowly from my seat in the front row.

Vanessa Cole watched in absolute horror from the back of the courtroom as the father of her child was hauled away in chains, her golden-ticket fantasy turning into a nightmare of debt and social ruin.

I walked down the center aisle, pausing just long enough to look Julian in the eye as the guards escorted him past me.

'You said I had nothing left, Julian,' I whispered softly, my voice carrying clearly to his ears. 'I had everything. You just didn't know how to count.'%

Julian didn't look up. He let the guards pull him away into the shadows.
