Chapter 4 - Auditing the Marriage: Joint Accounts and Missing Millions

The private conference room on the top floor of Sterling Global Logistics overlooked the glittering skyline of the city, but inside, the atmosphere was arctic. Marcus Vance sat across from me, flanked by two senior forensic accountants from Deloitte, their laptops open to glowing spreadsheets filled with crimson numbers.

'It's worse than we thought, Claire,' lead forensic auditor David Chen said, sliding a thick binder across the mahogany table. 'Over the past eighteen months, Julian didn't just skim off the top. He systematically gutted three separate subsidiary accounts. We're talking about a total of twelve point four million dollars diverted into unauthorized offshore holding accounts.'%

I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning the transaction IDs, wire transfer confirmations, and shell company registries. Every entry was a dagger aimed at the empire my father had spent forty years building.

'And let me guess,' I said evenly, 'the paper trail leads directly back to Julian's personal control?'%

'Not just Julian,' David corrected, clicking a key on his laptop to project an organizational chart onto the smart board. 'Look at this secondary signatory. It's not Julian's name on the primary Cayman entity. It's registered under a corporate proxy: Zenith Capital Solutions. And do you know who owns Zenith Capital?'%

Marcus leaned forward, narrowing his eyes. 'Who?'%

'Arthur Sterling's former chief financial officer, Richard Sterling... no relation, but a longtime confidant of your father, or so we thought,' David said grimly. 'Richard signed off on every single fraudulent capital transfer while your father was bedridden in the hospital.'%

A cold rage settled deep in my chest. Richard Sterling had been my father's right-hand man for thirty years. He had bounced me on his knee when I was a little girl. He had wept at my wedding to Julian. And all the while, he was actively helping my husband cannibalize the company from the inside out.

'Where is Richard right now?' I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.

'He called in sick to the emergency board meeting this morning,' Marcus replied. 'Word of Julian's arrest must have leaked to him. He's likely packing his bags to catch a private flight out of the country.'%

'Not if we lock down his assets first,' I declared, standing up. 'Marcus, draft an emergency injunction freezing all personal and corporate accounts tied to Richard Sterling. David, I want a complete audit of every signature Richard authorized in the last two years.'%

'Done,' David said, typing furiously. 'But Claire, there's something else. Look at the timestamp on the largest transfer—four million dollars, wired out exactly three days before your father passed away. The authorization code used to override the security firewall wasn't Julian's. And it wasn't Richard's.'%

I frowned, walking closer to the screen. 'Whose code was it?'%

David looked up, his expression deeply troubled. 'It was your father's master terminal code. But according to medical records, your father was in a medically induced coma at that exact hour.'%

The air in the room seemed to freeze. I gripped the edge of the table as the horrifying truth dawned on me. Someone hadn't just forged my father's signature on a will; someone had stolen his biometric credentials while he lay dying in the ICU.

'Find out who had access to that intensive care unit during those forty-eight hours,' I whispered, my voice trembling with a wrath unlike anything I had ever felt. 'Every nurse, every doctor, every visitor. I want every single name on my desk in one hour.'
